Sheffield Life, Loss and Death Festival May 2025

Sheffield Life, Loss and Death Festival 2025 includes ten events taking place across Sheffield throughout May 2025. The festival is curated by Compassionate Sheffield, and aims to create spaces for people to come together to talk openly, without stigma.

"What do you believe?" is a multi-faith and belief panel exploring perspectives on life and death. It will bring together people from diverse belief systems and professional backgrounds. This event aims to create a space to explore different worldviews and how they shape our understanding of life, death, and meaning. The panel will be followed by an audience Q&amp;A, and an opportunity for refreshments, conversation and personal reflection. Everyone is welcome to attend.Timings and participation information: •	13:30-14:30: Panel discussion between the three panellists, chaired by Lindsay de Wal. •	14:30-15:00: Audience Q+A. Questions for the panel will be invited from the audience. There will be the option to ask these verbally or to write them so that they can be read to the panellists. •	15:00-16:00: Attendees are welcome to stay for refreshments in Hallam View. Here there will be the opportunity to chat with other attendees and panellists. This will not be a facilitated discussion. Attendees will have the option to add their own thoughts and reflections on life and death to the “reflection wall”.

Panellists Jo Mutlow: A lifelong Humanist, Jo had prior careers in learning disability services and then higher education before settling on a twilight career in non-religious pastoral care and Humanist funeral celebrancy. Her Humanist beliefs (equality, justice, responsibility and kindness) underpin her support for people to make their own decisions; to find their own explanations for their circumstances and to curate unique farewell rituals.Most recently, Jo has worked on the Spiritual, Pastoral and Religious Care team at Bradford Teaching Hospitals where she developed a multi-belief WebApp as a digital resource for patients and staff including differentiated advice on death traditions and worldviews. She also teaches a course on Tying Up Your Loose Ends at U3A which prompts participants to tidy up and initiate conversations by recognising the realities of their own mortality.Joynal Ahmed: Joynal serves as the Head Imam of Epsom Mosque and Senior Chaplain for the newly merged Group Trust, encompassing St George's, Epsom, and St Helier University Hospitals (GESH). He is also a visiting chaplain at the Royal Marsden.Joynal embarked on his spiritual journey at the age of 11, memorising the Quran at 13, and later completed a comprehensive 7-year course in Islamic sciences, including studies in Arabic and Urdu language and literature at an Islamic seminary. After his religious studies, he studied law, specialising in International and Comparative Commercial Law with a focus on Islamic Finance and Islamic Commercial Law. In addition, Joynal is a qualified Integrative counsellor with speciality in Islamic counselling and operates his own private practice.Andrew Williams: Andrew is Head of Spiritual &amp; Pastoral Care at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust and has experience working as a chaplain across mental health (inpatient and community), acute, children’s, and palliative contexts. He is the course lead for the Post-Graduate Certificate in Psychospiritual Care run in partnership between Oxford Health and Oxford Brookes University and is currently managing a research project into the impact of spirituality and religion on the experience of bereavement by suicide.Andrew is Chair of the Mental Health Forum of CHCC (the College of Health Care Chaplains). Before chaplaincy, Andrew worked in many different roles including as a counsellor/psychotherapist with particular experience working as a counsellor with young people in schools and with a specialist counselling service for domestic abuse. There will be signs directing you to the lecture theatre.• The entrance to the lecture theatre can be accessed by stairs or a slope• The lecture theatre has wheelchair access from the entrance to the back of the lecture theatre. The front of the lecture theatre, and other seats are accessible by stairs.Hallam View is one level above Peak lecture theatre. This is where the refreshments will take place from 3pm.• This can be accessed via stairs or the lifts and there will be signs to direct you.• The venue is wheelchair accessible throughout. Parking:• There are 4 blue badge spaces outside the main entrance to the University. These are available on a first come first served basis. Sheffield Hallam University have limited car parking on campus, but are able to offer 5 visitor permits for Stoddart car park.• There is cycle parking outside the Owen Building.Public transport:• The Owen Building main entrance is around 320 metres uphill from Sheffield train station.• The Owen Building Main entrance is near to multiple bus stops on Arundel Gate.Recording:• Photography will take place on the day of the event. Attendees will have the opportunity to opt-in or out of this on the sign-in sheet.• Details regarding recording are not yet confirmed. If any recording does take place this will only be sound recording, and will only include the panellists and chair. The sound recording would be turned off at the beginning of the audience Q+A.Food and refreshments:• Refreshments will be available and free of charge.• Drinks will include tea, coffee and squash.• Dairy and soya milk will be available.• Cakes and biscuits will be available. These will include vegan and gluten free options.• These will be labelled with allergens.Quiet spaces and prayer rooms:• During the panel event attendees are welcome to leave the lecture theatre at any time.• The Multifaith Centre on level 2 of the Owen Building has spaces designated for prayer and meditation. There is a quiet space to pray, reflect and meditate for people of different religions or of no religion. There are male and female Muslim prayer rooms in the Multifaith Centre, Level 2 Owen There are Wudu facilities in the toilets adjacent to all of the prayer rooms. This is however open to the public / students.Seating options:• Chairs in the lecture theatre are fold down and they cannot be moved.• There will be some chairs available in Hallam View. These are moveable. Some have arm rests, some do not.• It is possible to reserve seating at the front, back, end of an aisle etc in the lecture theatre if this is needed.Toilets:• There are two accessible toilets next to the lecture theatre.• There are accessible toilets, male and female toilets and baby changing facilities outside the Hallam View room.• There are not any gender-neutral toilets in the Owen Building.Audio access details:• Microphones will be used by the chair, panellists and during the Q+A.Emergency procedures:• Fire alarms in the building are visual as well as siren.• There is a procedure for people needing to evacuate who can’t use the stairs.COVID Safety Precautions:• Masks are welcome at all our events.• If you have tested positive for Covid, or think you may have Covid, we would kindly ask you to not attend the event.• There are no windows in the Peak Lecture Theatre.
