Sheffield Life, Loss and Death Festival 2025 includes ten events taking place across Sheffield throughout May 2025. The festival is curated by Compassionate Sheffield, and aims to create spaces for people to come together to talk openly, without stigma.

A Death Cafe is a space for people to come together and talk openly about topics and questions related to death, dying, loss and grief. The death cafe will take place outdoors, around a campfire. There is no agenda and the conversation is led by the group, meaning no two death cafes are the same.The aim is to normalise conversations around death, by creating a space where the topic of death is not stigmatised or taboo.This event is facilitated by artist Charlie Hill and Rose Tomson, Creative outdoor facilitator - Facilitating Nature Connection in and around Sheffield.Location:The outdoor death cafe will take place in the Woodland activity area of Manor Fields Park.• Meeting Point: Manor Fields Car Park, 535 City Road, Sheffield, S2 1GF• In severe weather conditions we will move to the ground floor of York House, 553 City Rd, Sheffield S2 1GH, just next to the car park.Event Description:The outdoor death cafe will start with an introduction to what a death cafe is and how the death cafe will work. Refreshments will be offered, and people will be able to help themselves throughout.We will then outline principles we ask attendees to agree to, aiming to create a safe and supportive environment. We will then invite attendees to introduce themselves and we will open up the conversation, which is led by the group. We will have a couple of prompt questions if needed.This Cafe aims to create a supportive, conversational space, however it is not a grief support group or a space where any formal therapy or counselling support is provided.For those who prefer to do something with their hands whilst talking, there will be the option to make a basic tension tray using willow and natural materials. Guidance will be giving and no experience of arts or crafts is needed.We will finish the outdoor death cafe by summarising the discussion and inviting reflections.Participation information:Death cafes are facilitated group conversations, where all attendees will be welcome to speak and participate. There will however be no pressure to talk, if you decide you’d prefer to listen. The creative activity is optional. We will then show you the way to the Woodland activity area.The woodland activity area is accessed via a short walk from the main car park through the park. You have to go through a bit of a metal chicane that does allow for wheelchairs, down a wide tarmac path.Access to the woodland is off from this, on a narrower loose path of packed earth / woodchip. It can get muddy after rain. The woodland activity area is an open space in some trees with woodchip / earth floor and some roots / uneven areas.If it rains a little we will have a tarpaulin to put up over the death cafe area.If it rains a lot, or is very windy, we will move the death cafe to the ground floor of York House. The ground floor of York House is wheelchair accessible via a ramp to the back door of the building.Parking:• There is car parking available at Manor Fields Car Park, 535 City Road, Sheffield, S2 1GF• There a 3 Blue Badge parking bay(s) within the car park.• There is cycle parking available in the park, near the car parkPublic transport:• For those using public transport, there are regular Blue Route trams along City Road from Sheffield city centre with the Spring Lane tram stop less than two minutes from the entrance.• Many buses stop right outside York House.Recording:• Photography will take place on the day of the event. Attendees will have the opportunity to opt-in or out of this on the sign-in sheet.Food and refreshments:• Refreshments will be available and free of charge.• Drinks will include tea, coffee and squash.• Dairy and soya milk will be available.• Cakes and biscuits will be available. These will include vegan and gluten free options.• These will be labelled with allergens.Quiet spaces:• During the death cafe attendees are welcome to leave at any time, to make themselves a refreshment or for a break.• There is no specific separate quiet area, however the outdoor death cafe is taking place in a large park.Seating options:• Seating options in the woodland activity area will include logs, stools, camp-chairs and deck chairs. These will be arranged around the fire.• Seating options in York House are backed chairs.Toilets:• The outdoor toilet, nearest to the woodland wellbeing area is wheelchair accessible.• The toilets in York House are not wheelchair accessible, but the outdoor toilet can be accessed via a covered route.Audio access details:• The is no hearing loop in the outdoor activity wellbeing area or York House.Emergency procedures:• There is an audio fire alarm in York HouseCOVID Safety Precautions:• Masks are welcome at all our events.• If you have tested positive for Covid, or think you may have Covid, we would kindly ask you to not attend the event.• The event is being planned to take place outdoors.• If the event moves indoors to York House there are windows which can be opened to improve ventilation.Accessibility support:• To discuss any accessibility needs in advance of the event please email team@compassionatesheffield.co.uk or ring 07842 444 714• The person supporting with accessibility on the day will be Caroline Plenty, part of the Compassionate Sheffield team.
