Against All Odds: Class and Resistance in the Arts

Writing on the Wallis a dynamic, Liverpool-based community organisation that coordinates projects and events that celebrate writing in all its forms. We work with a broad and inclusive definition of writing that embraces literature, creative writing, journalism and non-fiction, poetry, songwriting, and storytelling. Writing on the Wall works with local, national and international writers whose work provokes controversy and debate. We work with all of Liverpool’s communities to promote and celebrate individual and collective creativity.

Against All Odds: Class and Resistance in the Arts Join us for a powerful discussion on class, creativity, and resilience in the arts. Against All Odds brings together a stellar panel of artists and writers who have challenged barriers and defied expectations. From poetry to fiction, performance to activism, they have each carved a space for working-class voices in the cultural landscape. Featuring Joelle Taylor, Stephanie Greer, and Barrington Paul Robinson, this event will explore the struggles of working-class creatives, the systemic obstacles they face, and the triumphs they’ve achieved along the way. How do we dismantle these barriers? And how do we celebrate the successes? Expect an evening of passionate conversation, personal insights, and inspiration from those who have paved the way.

Joelle Taylor – An award-winning poet, playwright, and author, Joelle Taylor’s work focuses on identity, power, and resistance. She is the winner of the 2021 T.S. Eliot Prize for her collection C+nto &amp; Othered Poems. Barrington Paul Robinson – An author and poet, Barrington Paul Robinson’s work delves into social justice, class struggles, and Black British identity, using literature as a tool for change. Stephanie Greer is an actor and an aerialist based in Liverpool. She trained at Bretton Hall gaining a 1st class honours degree in Acting and has worked both nationally and internationally for over 15 years. Alongside performing Stephanie has worked extensively with Equity and her activism has focused on creating better opportunities for working class artists and creatives. She was a founding member of Equity’s Class Network and remains the Chair.
