Certificates for this course will be only issued on request. The Health & Safety team will keep a record of your certificate number and the expiry date . Please contact Handsenquiries@pkc.gov.uk if you require a certificate , stating your name and course attendance date.

Can I make someone worse off by doing CPR?

If someone has a cardiac arrest – they will die without CPR. Currently less than 1 in 3 people who have a cardiac arrest get any CPR before an ambulance arrive. If you start CPR before the ambulance arrives you can double the person’s chance of survival.

What is the chance of CPR working?

Less than 10% of the 30, 000 people in the UK who have an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest treated by the ambulance service each year survive to leave the hospital alive. Early CPR by bystanders before an ambulance arrives doubles the chance of survival.

In the UK, can I be sued for doing CPR? Or not doing it?

This is exceedingly rare. No one has been successfully sued in the UK for doing CPR. If you have a duty of care for an individual and are expected to know CPR for your role (e.g. healthcare professional, lifeguard) you are at risk of being sued if you do not do CPR when expected to do so.

Has it really happened that people get injured trying to help?

The risk to the person doing CPR is very small. Your personal safety is the first priority, so if you have safety concerns, wait until an ambulance arrives or help arrives.

If other people are there, shouldn’t I get them to call for an ambulance immediately?

Yes, that’s a good idea. Make sure someone actually does it. Most people will have a mobile phone – the ambulance dispatcher will usually provide instructions so it’s good to have it on speakerphone.

If I can not get down onto the floor to do CPR due to injury/illness/condition, can I still attend?

You can attend but we can not issue a certificate of competence in Emergency First Aid at Work as it a requirement that you must be assessed for 2 minutes of CPR, and that CPR must be completed on the floor for an adult and child.

What happens if I do not attend my booked training course?

If you do not attend your booked training course and give no notice of your non-attendance, a charge of £50 will be made to your team. If you provide 24 hours' notice or in the case of sickness or unforeseen circumstances provide notification on the morning of the training a charge will not be made.

Can the course be cancelled?

This course requires a minimum number of attendees to proceed. If uptake is low, the course may be cancelled and alternative arrangements offered where possible.
