The online screening of selected shorts by Hangzhou new talented directors from Hangzhou New Cinema season.

Hangzhou New Talents, a section of shorts from Hangzhou new filmmakers, offers an intriguing opportunity to look back at their early work to trace the origins of their feature-length debuts. In Qiu Sheng&#x27;s Distant Thunder, the audience can detect the traces of Suburban Birds’ coming-of-age tale, bridged by a seamless connection between daily life and nightmares. In Zhu Xin&#x27;s On that Afternoon and Fragile Women, the enigmatic wanderlust of Vanishing Days can be seen in its nascent, visual stages. This program also features many other filmmakers who are not appearing in the feature-length screenings. Zheng Lu Xinyuan and Zhang Zimu collaborated on the Guangzhou urban-village film project Just Like Any Other Night, which is a mirror of some Hangzhou shorts, perfectly blending the Chinese cities&#x27; rapid changes with fleetingly intimate sensations. In Every Meeting Seems Parting, the experimental filmmaker Wang Ping, a graduate of the China Academy of Art (based in Hangzhou), reflects on themes such as art, kinship, and the self through the moving image as she attempts to explore the spiritual dilemma inherent in confronting time, mortality, and fate. In The Stone Lost in North, Shen Ruilan, a video artist who lives and works in Hangzhou, constructs a memory model about seasons and space set to Wu Bai’s signature number Summer Night Wind. All of the selected short films are UK premieres.1.Distant Thunder 雷电 Dir. It is just like life.If someone violated the rules of mutual understanding life would be a nightmare.2.On that Afternoon 那天下午 Dir. Zhu Xin | 16 min | 2017On that afternoon, an old man quarrels with the driver on a bus that runs between the old town and the new.3.Fragile Women 山风中的女人 Dir. Zhu Xin | 7 min | 2018At a picnic in the countryside, the woman accidentally strikes a shuttlecock into water. The man leaps into the river and then I hear the mountain wind.4.Just Like Any Other Night 平平无奇的一个晚上 Dir. Deep in the darkness, a girl murmurs a scattered diary of her lonely soul amid the city life. An intimate archive of fleeting sensations amid China’s rapid urbanization, especially on the Urban-Village, one of the most drastic scenes of Chinese urbanization. It was realized with the collaboration of young urban-villagers in Guangzhou, China. 5.Every Meeting Seems Parting 每次见面都像是告别 Dir. For over sixty years, these rural parents’ lives were isolated from modern society; they have never seen the sea. As their only daughter, Wang Ping decides to film a trip they take together to the ocean, to Weizhou Island.6.The Stone Lost in North 消失在北方的岩石 Dir. Director’s BiographyQiu Sheng (仇晟) was born in Hangzhou, China in 1989. He earned a Bachelor degree of Biomedical Engineering in Tsinghua before getting an MFA degree of film at Hong Kong Baptist University. He is aspired to discover new ways of filmmaking. His works like Winterstare and Golfville have won awards at China Independent Film Festival, Premiere Plans d’Angers, etc. Qiu has enrolled in Taipei Golden Horse Film Academy and Xining FIRST International Film Festival FIRST Training Camp. His feature debut Suburban Birds has been selected for Filmmakers of the Present Competition in Locarno Film Festival and more than 20 other film festivals. The film won Best Narrative Feature in Xining FIRST International Film Festival, Best Feature Film in Novos Cinemas Festival and two NETPAC Awards in both International Film Festival and Awards Macao and QCINEMA Film Festival.Shen Ruilan (沈蕊兰) (b.1993, Jiangsu province, China) now lives and works in Hangzhou. She studied at the China Academy of Art, Studio of Experimental Image and Institute of Radical Visual, where she gained a BA and then an MA. Shen is intrigued by the shared sense of transience between the medium of film and material objects exiled from the everyday life. Her work invites the audience for a ghostly wandering in the remains of the visual journeys between eyes and objects. Her artistic practice remakes the moving image, the material space, folk tales and text of her own writing. She was awarded CineCina Film Festival, Project Horizon Selection; The 3th West Lake International Documentary Festival (IDF) IDF Academy; BISFF 2018 Tide Award, Marée Chinses Selection, Beijing International Short Film Festival.Wang Ping (王坪)
(b.1992, Guilin, China)is an independent filmmaker and video artist. Wang graduated from China Academy of Art and majored in Experimental Image of Intermedia Art. She now lives and works in Beijing. Based on the combination of still and moving image, realtime documentary and subjective reconstruction, her work often derives from real life experiences, examines the spiritual predicament of an individual confronted with time, death, and fate, and reflects on the medium of image. Her work was awarded the jury prize of the 12th China Independent Film Festival (CIFF) short film competition, and has been screened in the Out of Competition section of the 33rd Busan International Short Film Festival (BISFF) and many domestic and foreign contemporary art and film exhibitions in Japan, the United States and Russia.
Zhang Zimu (张子木) is a moving image practitioner and researcher. She is currently conducting her PhD research on moving image and visual culture at City University of Hong Kong. She was an alumna of joint master program Docnomads (2014) and Berlinale Talent Campus (2016). She is a co-founder of Moonshine Screening Project, a mobile group that carries out independent screening and research projects. She is also active in film curating and socially-engaged art practices.
Zheng Lu Xinyuan (郑陆心源) is filmmaker based in Hangzhou, China. She tries to cultivate a personal visual practice that explores the boundaries of various media as well as of articulation itself. Her first feature film The Cloud in Her Room won the Tiger Award at the 49th International Film Festival Rotterdam. Her previous short films were selected into festivals such as Tribeca Film Festival, First Xining International Film Festival, Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture, China Independent Film Festival amongst others.
Zhu Xin (祝新) born in June, 1996, graduated from China Academy of Art in 2018, and majored in Film, TV, and Advertisement. His debut feature, Vanishing Days, was selected to Berlinale Forum, Busan International Film Festival New Currents, and the “Top 10 Noteworthy Young Filmmakers in 2017” by Beijing Film Academy Professor Zhang Xianmin. He is preparing for his second feature, Who is Sleeping on My Pillow, which is selected by Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum 2019.
