Exploring Unconscious Bias in our Early Years music practice

The award-winning Tri-borough Music Hub (TBMH) is the lead organisation that oversees the delivery of music education in three West London boroughs - the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea; the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham; and City of Westminster - working with schools, pupils, the workforce and the community.

This session delivered by Dr Stella Louis is for all those working musically with children in their EY.

This 2 hour session has been designed to start conversations and raise awareness of unconscious bias in relation to our EY music practice. The session, led by EY consultant Dr. Stella Louis, will explore affinity bias, attribution bias and confirmation bias and participants will be encouraged to reflect on their practice.We recognise and acknowledge that difficult conversations are likely to take place and our aim here is to help participants to feel comfortable and confident to engage in the dialogue. We aim to create a supportive and kind environment to enable participants to discuss, share and take the time to reflect on views, attitudes and beliefs and consider how this can effect our teaching practices and interactions.This session creates an opportunity for participants to engage in conversations that can be further explored and shared at the Sound Connections two-day virtual sit-in on diversifying the music education workforce on Thursday 11 and Friday 12 February: https://www.sound-connections.org.uk/events/inclusive-practice-in-action-diversifying-the-music-education-workforceParticipants who book to attend the Tri-Music Together session with Dr. Stella Louis will be offered a 10% discount on tickets for the Sound Connections event.Who is this session for?All those working musically with children in their EY.Dr Stella LouisDr Stella Louis leads a small team of Froebel Trust Travelling Tutors. She is a freelance early years consultant, trainer and author working with individual nursery settings, parents, nursery schools, local authorities, government departments and charities. She provides training and consultancy and is particularly interested in observation and its part in developing learning, especially through children’s schemas. Stella has worked both in the United Kingdom and internationally, in South Africa and Australia, where she worked with teachers to develop a Froebelian approach to teaching and learning.
