POSTPONED-Training: become a beaver activity surveyor.

The Blackdown Hills National Landscape partnership works to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the this protected landscape. We provide information about the local history and natural environment, involve people and organisations in looking after the landscape, and encourage people to visit and enjoy the area. The Blackdown Hills National Landscape (the new name for the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) is a tranquil and relatively isolated landscape, on the border of Devon and Somerset. The area is rich in wildlife and heritage. For many, it epitomises the English countryside, with hedgerows and copses, small farms with intricate field patterns, deep valleys and narrow, winding lanes.

Blackdown Hills National Landscape

Beaver activity surveys and practical beaver management training for members of the public living in and around the Blackdown Hills AONB

Otterhead Lakes car park

Jake Chant is the Beaver Field Officer for Devon Wildlife Trust. Jake monitors the beavers across the River Otter catchment and works with landowners to manage the impacts of beavers as and when it’s necessary to do so. In August this year, the Government announced that the beavers can remain in the River Otter and spread naturally. The training sessions provide an opportunity for members of the public to learn how to identify beaver field signs and understand how to manage the impacts of beavers if necessary. There will be opportunities for further beaver volunteering in spring 2021.

Each session will be 1 hour long and will be led by Jake Chant in person, in small groups of 5 around Otterhead Lakes. This may be subject to change if the current government restrictions are altered.
