Welcome to The Roman road network associated with the small town at Sandy, Bedfordshire. Join us for a fascinating online event where Mike Luke from Albion Archaeology will explore the relationship between the Roman small town at Sandy and the road network . Join us on Thursday April 24th, 2025 at 19:30 GMT.

This talk will focus on previously known and recent evidence for the Roman road network associated with the small town at Sandy in Bedfordshire. A recently published review has demonstrated that Roman Sandy, a small town in Bedfordshire, was defended by a wall and ditch. The review also clarified the layout of key roads associated with the settlement.The talk will include a summary of the evidence for Iron Age settlement in the area. The evidence includes three hillforts, suggesting that the Sandy area was an important location during this time. The routing of the some of the early roads in the area therefore presumably reflected the need to serve a pre-Roman settlement that had its origins in the late Iron-AgeThe possible existence of other 'major' Roman roads, connecting Sandy to the small towns at Cambridge and Irchester, and the Bedford area and Thrapston area, will also be debated.

This presentation will take place via Zoom, and will be followed by a Q&A session. As with all our talks, tickets are free, but we welcome donations when booking a ticket to help us cover our costs. Attendees will receive a link by email after registration, and reminder emails two days before the talk. The meeting room will open to the public at 7:15pm GMT with the talk starting at 7:30pm GMT.
