Supporting selfhood and connection in couples living with dementia through music

Wednesday 28th May , 1.30pm - 2.30pmIn Conversation with ... Dr. Justin ChristensenMusic can be a powerful way for people living with dementia to stay connected — with themselves and with others. In this talk, I explore how shared musical experiences can support a sense of self, agency, and relationship for couples living with dementia. Drawing on past research, I focus on how musical engagement can bring out strengths that remain, even as other abilities change. This includes ways of interacting through movement, rhythm, and shared attention that don’t rely on words — what we might call embodied and relational ways of being together.I will also touch on how simple music technologies can help create space for meaningful and creative interaction, allowing people living with dementia and their partners to make music together in ways that feel empowering and inclusive. Ultimately, this presentation shares a hopeful, person-centred view of dementia — one that focuses not on what is lost, but on what continues to matter for many: connection, expression, and shared joy.
