<h4>Victoria Kinsella</h4>Reimagining Music Education: Policy, Practice, and Posthuman PerspectivesThis presentation explores the current landscape of music education, examining the impact of policy frameworks such as the National Curriculum, the EBacc, and the National Plan for Music Education. It critiques the neoliberal marketisation of education and its effects on creative disciplines, highlighting barriers to access and equity.Through an example case study of the Exchanging Notes project <a href="https://youthmusic.org.uk/exchanging-notes" title="https://youthmusic.org.uk/exchanging-notes" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://youthmusic.org.uk/exchanging-notes</a> , alternative pedagogical approaches emerge, emphasising student agency, collaboration, and embodied learning. A posthuman lens challenges traditional assessment models, advocating for entangled, multisensory, and relational ways of understanding musical engagement. This talk invites reflection on reimagining music education beyond rigid policy constraints. Jon PigremTitle: Materials, Morphologies, and Alien SpacecraftFor centuries musical instruments were categorised and understood by the materials they were made from or the gesture used to play them - brass, woodwind, percussion and strings for example. In response to the development of early electric instruments the Hornbostel-Sachs Classification added the fifth category of Electrophones to its taxonomy in 1940, replacing what was once based in phenomenology, materiality, and human body morphology with epistemological terms such as: synthesizer, keyboard, and organ. This dramatic shift in the way instruments were classified was indicative of a wider question, and one that still runs through NIME discourse today: Who are our new instruments, and how do they relate to their performers, audiences, and surrounding cultures?This talk reflects some of the common pitfalls of DMI design and discusses the potential of reincorporating materials and morphologies back into the design process. Using examples from my own work and research I hope to entangle a few disparate strands with a general focus on instrument identity.
