Full title: Assessing the impact of rights-based approaches in schools: Unicef UK's Rights Respecting Schools Award

Taking part in the UK Committee for Unicef&#x27;s (UNICEF UK) Rights Respecting Schools Award requires schools to use the Convention on the Rights of the Child to teach pupils about their rights and how these apply in terms of their own lives. It is the best known, and certainly the biggest initiative promoting rights-based approaches in UK schools, with over 5000 schools involved. This seminar looks at RRSA in detail, specifically addressing the question of how to measure the impact and value of such approaches, but will also include broader discussion about rights-based education and examine the linkages with global education and citizenship education. Frances Bestley and Sarah Hamilton (UNICEF UK) will give an initial introduction to the RRSA, covering the aims, processes and levels of the award. The main focus, however, will be on how the impact of achieving the award is measured, with a look at analysis of questionnaire data from children and adults in schools, headteachers&#x27; self-evaluation, feedback from visits to schools and information from school inspection reports.Hugh Starkey (UCL Institute of Education) will then provide a response and commentary on the initiative, drawing on his expertise in Citizenship and Human Rights Education.<h3>Format</h3>This event is to be hosted via Zoom. Registered participants will be emailed a link in the days before the event, and also 30 minutes before as a reminder.Time after the presentations will be given over to a Q&amp;A with participants. <h3>Intended audience </h3>Headteachers, teachers, people interested in children&#x27;s rights, as well as in measuring impact.<h3>Speaker biographies</h3>Frances Bestley is the Programme Director for the Rights Respecting Schools Award at UNICEF UK, who she joined in 2010. Her role is to implement the Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA), leading a team of fourteen. Previously, Frances worked for the Department for Children, Schools and Families National Strategies Programme, as a local authority mathematics advisor, and as a secondary school senior leader and mathematics teacher. Frances has a Masters in Equity and Achievement from the UCL Institute of Education, London.Dr Sarah Hamilton is the Research, Evaluation and Participation Manager at UNICEF UK. Joining in 2016, she works to support the gathering and use of evidence to understand and demonstrate the organization&#x27;s impact in the UK, including through the Rights Respecting Schools Award programme. Prior to joining UNICEF UK, Sarah has worked primarily in the field of mental health research, with a strong emphasis on co-produced and participative research methodologies. She has worked on a wide range of research projects and evaluations in health, social care and education settings. Sarah has a PhD in sociology which explored interactions in a psychiatric setting, and a MA in Human Rights. Sarah is also a governor of a primary special school in South London. Hugh Starkey is Professor of Citizenship and Human Rights Education at UCL Institute of Education, London and founding co-director of the International Centre for Education and Democratic Citizenship (ICEDC).
