Charles Darwin at Down House

Dilettanti was founded by Sarah Bowles and Philippa Barton in 1980 to encourage the study and the enjoyment of the arts. The programme of events is made up of full and half days of visits, often combining  background lectures by expert speakers, which provide a context to the particular subject.

Visit to Down House and its gardens in Kent, the home  of Charles Darwin  and his family for over forty years.

Charing Cross Station

Down House was bought in 1842 by Charles Darwin and remained the family home until his death in 1882. The house survives little changed today and the gardens, central to Darwin's work ,have been restored . It was here that Darwin developed his theory of evolution and wrote his groundbreaking work, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, which was published in 1859.
