The UK has the highest substance use problems in Europe, with approximately one third of all adults in England and Wales reported to have used substances at least once in their lifetime.
People with a substance use addiction can often lose control over their actions. They crave and seek out their substance of choice - alcohol, caffeine, prescription drugs, illegal drugs - no matter what the cost, even at the risk of damaging friendships, hurting family, or losing jobs.
The value of family involvement in substance use treatment cannot be overstated. Support from family members not only increases the likelihood of successful treatment, it can also help improve mental adjustment to addiction-free living, and even prevent relapses.
