Belfast & District Trades Council

 As secretary of the Belfast Trades Council from 1947-1975, Betty Sinclair played a major part in the trade union and civil rights movement.

<p>IT is 40 years since Betty Sinclair died, we are marking this anniversary with an International Women’s Day event  with Betty&#x27;s great-great-grand-niece Jenny.   As secretary of the Belfast Trades Council, Betty Sinclair took part in many actions for justice, defence and demands of the working class, nationally and internationally.  She along with others campaigned to have Paul Robeson’s passport restored to him and was particularly proud to meet him personally in 1958 when he came to Belfast and performed in two concerts. 1967 Betty was the Belfast Trades Councils’ representative at the talks which founded the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association, she served as NICRA chairperson until 1969.   In 1981 she organised the 100th anniversary of the Belfast Trades Council in the Belfast City Hall.As a young woman she was one of the organisers of the Outdoor Relief Struggle in 1932. Of this she said:  “Those fateful days, from the 3rd to the 14th of October, 1932, created great fears within the Establishment of London and Belfast-a united working class in Ireland, was and still is, their constant nightmare”Lynda was a friend and comrade of Betty’s since 1969 when she first came to Belfast and met Betty through the Communist Party. She carried out an interview with Betty in Belfast Tech in 1981, and we hope to show a short part of that. Lynda is a civil rights, women’s rights, and trade union activist and has been member of Belfast Trades Council since 1979. </p>
