Nationwide arts festival celebrating refugees from Nazi Europe and their contribution to British cultureMarch 2020 marked the official end of the festival, but also the beginning of a longer-term commitment to celebrating the impact of this remarkable generation of émigrés under the Insiders/Outsiders umbrella

Charlotte Grant will talk about her grandfather Martin Bloch. The event will be chaired, by David Herman, whose artist father Josef Herman.

Charlotte Grant, senior lecturer in English at the New College of Humanities in London, will talk about her grandfather Martin Bloch (1883-1954), a German-Jewish artist who came to Britain as a refugee in 1934. Influential as a colourist and teacher, his paintings, which comprise dynamic still lifes, landscapes, and cityscapes, often with figures, are found in public and private collections in Britain, America, Europe and Israel. This talk will focus on the theme of belonging, looking at Bloch’s relationship to the places, people and landscapes he lived amongst and painted in. She will look at paintings from Spain, Germany, Italy, Denmark, France, the USA, and the UK, especially London, Dorset and Wales, where he painted with his close friend Josef Herman. Herman’s painting of miners in South Wales and Bloch’s view of workers walking home from the Bethesda Quarry were included in the Sixty Paintings for ‘51 Exhibition as part of the Festival of Britain, but like Herman, Bloch’s work stands out from his British contemporaries. In retrospect, Bloch’s work looks profoundly European, rather than specifically German, although his viewpoints are often recognisably Expressionist.
