Nationwide arts festival celebrating refugees from Nazi Europe and their contribution to British cultureMarch 2020 marked the official end of the festival, but also the beginning of a longer-term commitment to celebrating the impact of this remarkable generation of émigrés under the Insiders/Outsiders umbrella

A talk by the artist’s daughter Anita Peleg

Naomi Blake arrived in London in 1952, after surviving Auschwitz and contributing to the creation of the State of Israel. In London she knew no-one except her new husband Asher Blake and she sought a new way to express herself and her experiences. Thus, started a long career in sculpture motivated by her desire to commemorate the past horrors of persecution and move toward the promotion of understanding and goodwill between people of different faiths and backgrounds. Her sculpture develops through a cycle of embryonic forms, enclosed and protected figures, gradually opening out to free the figure from its haven to stand against all adversity and spread its wings.Her daughter, Anita Peleg, author of Dedication in Sculpture, a retrospective of Naomi’s work, will describe the development of her mother’s work whilst looking back at her experiences during the Holocaust and looking forward at Naomi’s hopes and optimism for the future. This will be followed by a Q&A led by art historian Monica Bohm-Duchen.This event is held in partnership with the <a href="https://ajr.org.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">AJR</a> and <a href="https://www.generation2generation.org.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Generation2Generation</a>, of which Anita is a founding trustee.<a href="https://insidersoutsidersfestival.org/events/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Insiders/Outsiders online events</a> are free, but in order to help us continue our activities into next year and beyond, a donation of at least £5 per event would be hugely appreciated.
