Free digital citizenship and media literacy training + resources through the Be Internet Citizens programme, delivered by ISD and YouTube.

The <a href="https://www.isdglobal.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Institute for Strategic Dialogue</a> (ISD), in partnership with YouTube, would like to invite you to attend a free teacher training on the brand-new <a href="https://internetcitizens.withyoutube.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Be Internet Citizens </a>digital citizenship curriculum. This interactive webinar will equip teachers with the context, tools, and materials to deliver our PSHE Association-accredited curriculum to students age 13+. As well as receiving a free copy of the resource, participants will be guided through key concepts and activities by our team of expert facilitators, and leave the session empowered to develop their students’ media literacy, critical thinking and digital citizenship skills.Numbers for each session will be limited to allow space for discussion and questions, so we encourage you to register early!What is Be Internet Citizens and what has it achieved to date?In 2017, the ISD launched Be Internet Citizens in partnership with Google and YouTube, delivering in-school workshops and teacher training in schools across the UK. Our aim is to build young people’s resilience to online harms - including disinformation and hate speech - and empower them to become positive, accountable and conscientious leaders online. As our <a href="https://www.isdglobal.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Be-Internet-Legends-and-Citizens-digital-report.pdf" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">impact reporting</a> shows, students who engage with the curriculum are better able to critically analyse information online, build empathy towards others, and effectively respond to harmful digital content. <ul><li>92% of participating teenagers felt they had gained new knowledge on key digital citizenship and media literacy topics;</li><li>71% felt that they would behave differently online;</li><li>97% of participating teachers said they were ‘very likely’ to deliver the Be Internet Citizens lessons to their students going forward.</li></ul>In just three years the programme has reached over 60,000 students and 650 educators, reaching classrooms from London and Leeds to Portsmouth and Preston. It has been recognised by experts at the Department for Education (DfE) and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), and received direct engagement from MPs across government including Education Secretary Gavin Williamson, former DCMS Parliamentary Chair Damian Collins, and Home Secretary Priti Patel. “[Be Internet Citizens] really gives [young people] the skills to thrive on and offline in their daily lives.”- <a href="https://twitter.com/AlexNorrisNN/status/1088439535233650688?fbclid=IwAR1EccpNvWbuCJtLgyzuCbmCPEAZTa7CJe6VnB46IFlB9tEI67am3A3qXwc" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Watch Alex Norris MP </a>discuss Be Internet Citizens in Parliament. Why does Digital Citizenship education matter, and what will I / my students learn? During the pandemic, young people have spent more time online than ever before - while they may be tech savvy or ‘digital natives’, they can still lack the skills or knowledge to navigate the web safely. Indeed, <a href="https://www.ofcom.org.uk/research-and-data/media-literacy-research/childrens" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">latest reports</a> from <a href="https://www.ofcom.org.uk/research-and-data/internet-and-on-demand-research/online-nation" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Ofcom </a>indicate that:<ul><li>55% of 12-15 year olds receive their news from social media, but only 39% think it is trustworthy. </li><li>25% of 12-15s do not consider whether online information they see is true or accurate.</li><li>81% of 12-15s reported a harmful experience online in the past year (2019).</li><li>58% of teens chose to ignore online hate; 10% gave it greater exposure by sharing or commenting.</li></ul>The newly updated Be Internet Citizens curriculum covers a range of topics that speak to the realities of digital use in 2021, including: <ul><li>Identifying disinformation (e.g. conspiracy theories, clickbait, and deep fake videos) and misinformation;</li><li>Understanding bias and how it can influence our opinions or perspectives on social issues;</li><li>Analysing &#x27;us vs them&#x27; narratives, and how online echo chambers may widen social divides;</li><li>Responding effectively to hate speech, and forging more inclusive digital communities;</li><li>Creating inspiring digital content to champion causes, promote positive messages and support peers.</li></ul>&quot;This is the ideal resource, we’ll be using this forever. We have 240 girls aged 11 to 16 years whose lives can be changed positively from the programme.
