Sound & Movement Sanctuary (SMS) is an initiative created by Devaki Thomas, in 2020, located between SE London, UK and now the Yukon, Canada.  SMS collates her years of experience in Movement Psychotherapy, Therapeutic Hatha Yoga, Festival Directing, Music to Heal & Dance to Connect. Started in response to the pandemic and subsequent lack of connection. Events & sessions in movement and sound have  received many positive reviews bringing participants connection, release, relaxation, healing and grounding.

Learn & practice beautiful geometric patterns, fierce yet delicate dance of South India, high energy, uplifting!

Bharatanatyam Dance Basics is meant for lovers of the dance style looking to step into the basic formations through detailed movement exploration and repetition of simple footwork and body positions. It is also designed for beginners to learn the intricate hand gestures and foot patterns in a simple fun learning environment. Known as the fiery rhythm heavy temple dance of Tamil Nadu, Bharatanatyam has gained popularity world wide and its movements can be adopted into any movement practice. Facilitator, Devaki Thomas, teaches with embodied attunement and person-centred energy to inspire and connect dancers to the beauty of their own movements. She began her training in classical dance from the age of 5, under Ratna Roy (Odissi Dance) and later studied Bharatanatyam with Nimi Bali and Alka Goyal. She currently studies with Anusha Subrahmanyan in London, UK. She opened Devi Dasi Dance School in Western Canada 1995 - 2011and taught and performed with her students across the province at festival and events. Now settled in London UK she has completed her MA in Dance Movement Psychotherapy from Goldsmiths, University of London. She has spent the last 8 years training in and receiving a diploma in Odissi Classical Indian dance at The Bhavan London, and received a 200hr teacher training certificate in Hatha Yoga from the Abhijna School of Yoga in Kerala, India and has been teaching beginner Bharatanatyam for the last year. This 8 week course will aim to give participants a strong sense of the basic steps and hand movements and will continue in January. With a lifetime in the arts as a musician with award-winning bands, a director of international music festivals and art centres, founder of an Indian dance school, head of marketing &amp; creative programming for top UK arts organizations she is now dedicating her life to help people through body movement and sound explorations.She has worked with clients ranging in age from 5 to 65 years and brings a strong sense of empathy and passion for helping clients understand and express themselves to enable more self-compassion and self-reliance.She believes everyone has the capacity to move through places of trauma held in the body by re-building trust within the therapeutic relationship and using the body to express difficult emotions.
