ONLINE: The Heat is On examines decarbonisation of domestic heat, one of the most complex challenges the UK faces in the race to net-zero

LSBU’s Climate Emergency Series takes a further look at the decarbonisation and decentralisation of domestic heat, in particular the policy landscape which is proving slow to shape. We&#x27;ll dig into the challenges of a nation scrabbling to deploy new technologies in order to meet aspirational targets and political ambitions - all whilst awaiting announcement of the supporting regulatory framework.How much rests on what technology wins the support of the legislators? If we&#x27;re going all out for electrification - as ambitious targets suggest - the why the spark gap? Where do heat pumps and hydrogen fit? How do we decommission gas and escalate decentralised technologies? And what policies should we, as a nation, be enacting if we are serious about hitting the British commitment under the Paris Climate Accord? Yet again, we have secured some of UK’s leading experts: 3.00pm - Opening address - <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/andy-ford-1b20b2b/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Prof Andy Ford</a>, Professor of Building Systems Engineering3.15pm - Keynote speech - &quot;Unicorn or Silver Bullet? Filling evidence gaps on decarbonising heat&quot; <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/jsaltmarsh/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jon Saltmarsh</a>, Deputy Director, Engineering &amp; Research, BEIS Jon will present the evidence and research that sits behind BEIS&#x27;s twin track approach - both supporting the deployment of electric heat pumps and the parallel de-risking and demonstration of hydrogen. Speaking from a Research and Engineering rather than Policy perspective, Jon will question whether debating electrification over hydrogen is a distraction from the real question: how best to move heating away from fossil fuels. Through examples and case studies, Jon will demonstrate how decarbonisation of domestic gas is not an either / or question - it is not this tech over that, or cost over efficiency - but is in fact a &#x27;whole systems&#x27; question. Once we accept there is no magic bullet, we can start to think differently about programme approaches. 3.35pm - &quot;Pumping Policy for a Heat Pump Transition&quot; - <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/janrosenow/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr Jan Rosenow</a>, Director of European Programmes, The Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP) and Honorary Research Fellow at Oxford University - As well as being a prolific researcher, Jan&#x27;s winning pitch to BEIS for an enquiry into the <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6689477352671477760/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Decarbonisation of Heat</a> went before the Committee in February 2021. Drawing on his extensive pan-European knowledge, and his unique insights into the UK policy landscape, Jan will outline the 3 policy alignments that are urgent and essential if the Government is serious about installing 600,000 heat pumps installations per year by 2028. 3.45pm - &quot;Holes &amp; heroes: learning from others to fill in the UK’s heat chasm&quot; - <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/richardlowes/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Richard Lowes, </a>Research Fellow, UKERC, University of Exeter <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/richardlowes/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"></a> Richard was one of four academics who gave evidence at the February 2021 <a href="https://committees.parliament.uk/oralevidence/1720/html/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Committee Enquiry</a>, having been working on heat decarbonisation for over a decade. Aside from accruing a remarkable expertise around policy and governance, Richard is an impassioned and engaging speaker. Stand by to be entertained as Richard throws the net wide and looks at lessons gleaned from home and abroad. 3.55pm - <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/laura-bishop-infinitas-design/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Laura Bishop</a>, MSc CEng MIMechE MInstR, Chair of the Ground Source Heat Pump Association (GSHPA) Laura is a chartered mechanical engineer with 20 years engineering experience with companies such as Rolls Royce and E.ON Connecting Energies. As Chair of the GSHPA, Laura will speak on the recent policy developments such as those proposed in the 10 point plan and the announcement to phase out gas boilers from 2025. Whilst it is a given that heat pumps can fill the gap, Laura will bust a few myths around potential pitfalls of mass roll out.4.05pm - &quot;Getting in the Zone&quot; - <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/amy-ritchie-9b0993123/?originalSubdomain=uk" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Amy Ritchie,</a> Policy Officer, The Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE). The ADE is the leading trade association for decentralised energy, representing more than 130 parties from across industrial, commercial and public sectors. As the ADE&#x27;s lead on heat policy, Amy will pick apart the patchwork of policies currently affecting heat, and explain how &#x27;zoning&#x27; might drive a whole systems approach, with a domino effect on local and regional supply chains, jobs and skills.
