The Instituto Cervantes is the world's largest and most important institution dedicated to the teaching of Spanish and the other languages of Spain, as well as to the diffusion of the culture of Spanish-speaking countries.The Instituto Cervantes of Leeds was inaugurated on April 23rd, 1993. Therefore, in 2018 we are celebrating our 25th anniversary. A quarter of a century collaborating actively in the teaching of Spanish and the spreading of the Hispanic culture.

To Celebrate 50 Years of Democracy in SpainThe Instituto Cervantes is pleased to invite you to a special screening of the film:🎬 El mundo que fue y que es by Pablo LlorcaLas costuras de la guerraThis screening is part of a broader reflection on how the traumas of the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship—initially addressed through metaphor and subtlety—gradually became central themes in public discourse during Spain’s democratic transition. The programme features iconic films from that era, long-neglected or “cursed” titles, and contemporary perspectives on an unresolved past.One of the standout works in this selection is Pablo Llorca’s powerful and restrained film, which embodies political resistance through cinematic simplicity. Known for illuminating overlooked stories, Llorca traces the journey of several communist militants from the postwar years to the present.Structured in four parts and an epilogue, the film poses a profound question:Should one remain faithful to their ideals, even if reality offers no space to realise them? Or should one adapt—at the cost of losing a part of themselves?📽️ The film will be shown in Spanish with English subtitles.

Con motivo de los 50 años de democracia en España, el Instituto Cervantes se complace en presentar la proyección de la película:🎬 El mundo que fue y que es de Pablo LlorcaLas costuras de la guerraEsta proyección forma parte de una reflexión más amplia sobre cómo los traumas de la Guerra Civil y la dictadura franquista —abordados al principio de forma metafórica e indirecta— fueron ganando presencia en el debate público durante los años de la Transición. El ciclo incluye películas emblemáticas de aquella época, títulos malditos y visiones contemporáneas sobre un pasado aún sin cerrar.Una de las obras más destacadas es la de Pablo Llorca, que combina la sobriedad estilística con una clara vocación de resistencia política. Conocido por su enfoque sutil pero contundente, Llorca da voz a historias olvidadas tanto en el cine de ficción como en el documental.Su película ofrece un recorrido impactante por la historia del Partido Comunista de España desde la posguerra hasta la actualidad. Dividida en cuatro partes y un epílogo, sigue a varios militantes cuyas vidas giran en torno a una pregunta fundamental:¿Debe uno mantenerse fiel a sus ideales, incluso cuando la realidad no permite llevarlos a cabo? ¿O adaptarse, a riesgo de perder su identidad?📽️ La película se proyectará en versión original en español con subtítulos en inglés.
