The net zero series sheds light on the work already undertaken by UKRI’s flagship programme -the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund.

We live in a time of unprecedented change. The way we live our lives and do business is impacting the planet and driving environmental change on a scale unique in the Earth’s history. We are consuming our natural resources at unprecedented levels whilst polluting our environment, affecting our air, soils, water and biodiversity. This is increasing the challenges linked to extreme weather and a changing climate which can have devastating impacts on the environment and human life and hinder economic growth. To meet these challenges, and recognising our leadership potential, in 2019 the UK became the first major economy to commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. The net zero series sheds light on the work already undertaken by UKRI’s flagship programme -the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund to address the key challenges that will help the UK build back greener. It will bring together world-renowned researchers and innovators across the breadth of our funding disciplines to discuss the need for innovative solutions to heat our homes, travel to work, develop and transform our industries, cater to our diet, enjoy our leisure time, and prosper from a cleaner, healthier environment in parallel with growing our economy.We will run a monthly webinar from April to November featuring ISCF challenges, UKRI councils and project leads, as well as renowned external experts from academia, industry and technology fields. This month we will be discussing Sustainable Buildings: In the UK, the buildings account for around 20% of emissions. Last year the government published its 10-point plan for a Green Industrial Revolution, setting out a path to Net Zero by 2050. Moving towards net zero will mean step-changes in the way we construct, maintain and power our buildings and infrastructure. Building better first time round will ease the burden of having to decarbonise in the future. To this end, the Transforming Construction Challenge has been making transformational changes to support industry to accelerate the shift away from a system that delivers the cheapest outcome to one with maximum value to society. This session will explore how government, construction, energy and manufacturing is working together, scaling up and increasing adoption of net zero technologies and approaches to dramatically bring down the emissions of our built environment. Yewande Akinola MBE - Innovate UK Ambassador for Clean Growth and Infrastructure Yewande is a chartered engineer, innovator and speaker. Her engineering experience includes the design and construction, innovation and manufacture of buildings and systems in the built environment. She has worked on projects in the UK, Africa, the Middle East and East Asia and has been named the UK Young Woman Engineer of the Year by the Institution of Engineering and Technology. She has also been awarded the Exceptional Achiever Award from the Association for BAME Engineers and the Association of Consultancy and Engineering, U.K. (ACE). She is a Visiting Professor at the University of Westminster. She is passionate about STEM communication and has presented Engineering programmes for Television. In the 2020 New Year Honours list, Yewande was awarded an MBE for services to engineering innovation and diversity in STEM. Peter Goring - Technical Lead, Mace Tech

Stuart Norman - Managing Director, Keltbray Piling Stuart is the Managing director for piling at Keltbray Group and have successfully grown the business to become a leader in the piling and ground Engineering field in the UK, winning numerous industry awards along the way. Crawford Wright - Head of Architecture and Design, Department for EducationCrawford is a chartered architect and Head of Architecture and Design at the Department For Education. He leads a multi disciplinary team responsible for construction and design standards for all new and refurbished schools and colleges in England. With 15 years experience in school design and 30 years in public sector delivery Crawford is committed to user centred solutions that engage with clients to deliver value for money and the DfE has the largest public sector post occupancy evaluation programme to support better schools. Crawford developed and led a UKRI supported R&amp;D project (GenZero) to create a prototype offsite construction platform for new school buildings which is totally zero carbon.

Ron Cowley - CEO, Active Building Centre He has 35 years’ experience as a CEO / COO / MD of UK &amp; USA Global multi-site Corporations growing successful organisations satisfy shareholder and stakeholder expectations within the Defence, Nuclear, Scientific and Oil &amp; Gas sectors. Some of his key competences include: - Investment, M&amp;A, business growth, innovation, manufacturing &amp; bringing technology to market.A Keen advocate of delivering solutions that meet the needs of the carbon challenge, addressing fuel poverty to make a difference of how people live their lives. He sees ABC the platform which can not only provide active buildings on new builds but also addressing the retrofit challenge. The development of ABC from active Buildings to the Intelligent building will enable ABC to address the Help the aging challenge with the NHS.He started his career as an Apprentice Engineer working through all areas of manufacturing businesses becoming a qualified Mechanical &amp; Electrical Engineer. He has additional business skills including MBA &amp; PhD in organisational Leadership &amp; Change.He has several NED &amp; Chairman positions working within the Charity &amp; voluntary sector supporting youth training &amp; development and mentoring disadvantages people. Ian Hutchcroft - Director, Energiesprong UK<a href="http://energiesprong.eu/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Energiesprong </a>is an approach to delivering zero carbon retrofit and new build homes, using offsite approaches, financed by savings and with performance guaranteed. Ian is part of the Energiesprong team adapting the Dutch developed approach for the UK market, working closely with teams in Netherlands, France and Germany. He is leading ground-breaking delivery projects across the UK, including the Mayor of London’s Retrofit Accelerator Homes programme and the Zero Energy Buildings Catalyst project, and now building a volume market with social landlords and industry partners. Ian is also Chair of Plymouth Energy Community and has previously worked with pioneer NGOs, local authorities and architects developing zero carbon solutions. He has won two Ashden Awards for sustainable energy innovation.

Vincent Clancy – Chairman &amp; Chief Executive OfficerVincent joined Turner &amp; Townsend in 1989 and was appointed to the Executive Board in 2002. He has set the strategic direction of the business as Chief Executive Officer since 2008. In that time he has overseen a period of strong growth and global diversification, quadrupling turnover and growing headcount to almost 7,000 people across 45 countries.A Chartered Quantity Surveyor by trade, he has in-depth experience of the set-up, procurement and delivery of some of the industry’s most complex major programmes across property, infrastructure and natural resources. Vincent takes an active and leading role in the strategic direction of the business, participating in all Regional Boards, the Management Board, Investment Committee and Major Programmes Board. Vincent also sits on the Construction Leadership Council Board with an exports remit.
