AIDS Cultural Activism and Speculative Health Promotion

The Staff Pride Network is an inclusive network that serves as a resource for the rich diversity of LGBT+ employees across the institution, including PhD students who prefer to attend staff events.We strive to take an intersectional approach to providing a safe, supportive and welcoming environment for all people who self identify as part of LGBT+ communities, whether or not they are 'out' in the wider world, and to make LGBT+ issues more visible within the University environment.Different organisations use different acronyms to refer to specific groups, and terminology is always evolving. Our definition of LGBT+ includes, among others, those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, gender fluid, intersex, non-binary, asexual, pansexual and polyamorous. It also includes all those individuals and communities whose sexuality or gender identity is a matter of shared personal, political and/or social experience, as well as those who are LGBT+ allies.SAFE SPACEWe welcome all those who self identify as part of LGBT+ communities, regardless of identity or background, and provide a space where all can feel safe and included. We do not support or tolerate anti-LGBT+ violence, harassment or speech, and encourage inclusive and respectful language. Staff Pride Network

This talk considers the relationship between the "futures" of HIV/AIDS and their deployment within recent cultural media.

<p>Thinking through Leo Herrera&#x27;s The Fathers Project (2018-19) and Russell T. Davies&#x27;s It&#x27;s A Sin (2021), Chase explores how these media reinvent HIV health promotion messages (both historical and contemporary) by speculating potential futures. He demonstrates how these media reinforce institutional messages about HIV prevention but also engage in a social critique that contests and queers institutional perceptions of the &quot;future&quot; and &quot;end of AIDS&quot;.</p>

<p>Chase Ledin is a queer cultural theorist, science and technology (STS) scholar, and sexual health researcher. He is currently a PhD researcher in cultural theory at the University of Edinburgh. His thesis explores the social implications of “post-AIDS” in contemporary US and UK societies. The project draws on a variety of archival materials, moving-image productions, public health campaigns, and historical ephemera to understand the relationship between biomedical, social and cultural interpretations of HIV intervention strategies since 1996.</p>
