Newham Heritage Month 2025

Newham Heritage Month is an annual heritage festival organised by Newham Council with kind support from National Lottery Heritage Fund. In 2025, the festival will take place in September 2025 with a programme of events on the theme of 'Newham at 60'.

Join us for an evening celebrating the work created by artist-in-residence Sam Ikhuoria, studio holders Frames of Mind and local residents. A collective response to Alice Billing, Newham's first female Inspector of Nuisances (1897-1930), and the last sixty years of the historic building named after her.‘Inspector of Nuisances’ was the official job title for sanitation inspectors in the 19th century. Alice Billing provided vital advocacy for working women and well-being in an environment of male officials and deprivation.The projected installation features playful and personal stop-frame animations and digital media produced during creative community workshops. The work explores themes inspired by the Alice Billing story; women’s health, equal rights and social change.Sam Ikhuoria, a Newham Artist, will be exhibiting the work he produced during his artist-in-residence, which he completed in July. Head to Stratford Town Hall Car Park, West Ham Lane, London, E15 4PH. The entrance to the car park is directly opposite the Freaks and Greeks bar, Stratford. Walk through the car park to the back, where there are a pair of metal double gates. This is the entrance where someone will greet you.
