Nationwide arts festival celebrating refugees from Nazi Europe and their contribution to British cultureMarch 2020 marked the official end of the festival, but also the beginning of a longer-term commitment to celebrating the impact of this remarkable generation of émigrés under the Insiders/Outsiders umbrella

Celia Frank will talk about the life and work of her father, German-born
textile and wallpaper designer and artist, Julius Frank.

Julius Frank (1897-1985) was a German Jew who, despite having served in the German army during the First World War, was forced to flee from Berlin to Britain in 1936, where he established a successful design studio, Frank Designs Ltd. He eventually employed about twenty-five designers and sold designs to textile and wallpaper manufacturers in Britain, Europe and North America. Among his employees and associates were other émigrés, including the painter Walter Nessler and the renowned textile designer Tibor Reich.Julius wanted his daughter to go to art school and take over his business. Instead, Celia read History and Economics and became a civil servant, working on a wide range of issues including European environmental negotiations and energy policy. Celia holds the design archive of Frank Designs Ltd, from the Manchester and London studios, and from her father's Berlin studio, together with paintings and sketchbooks, including his wartime trench sketchbooks.The event will be chaired by design historian Dr. Anna Nyburg, Honorary Lecturer at Imperial College London and author of Émigrés: The Transformation of Art Publishing in Britain (2014) and The Clothes on our Backs: How Refugees from Nazism Revitalised the British Fashion Tradition (2020).Image: Julius Frank, mid-century design (detail), Frank Designs Studio<a href="https://insidersoutsidersfestival.org/events/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Insiders/Outsiders online events</a> are free, but in order to help us continue our activities into next year and beyond, a donation of at least £5 per event would be hugely appreciated.
