ITINERARIO ZARZUELA: Tiempo de Zarzuela

The Instituto Cervantes is the world's largest and most important institution dedicated to the teaching of Spanish and the other languages of Spain, as well as to the diffusion of the culture of Spanish-speaking countries.The Instituto Cervantes of Leeds was inaugurated on April 23rd, 1993. Therefore, in 2018 we are celebrating our 25th anniversary. A quarter of a century collaborating actively in the teaching of Spanish and the spreading of the Hispanic culture.

<h4>The Instituto Cervantes, in collaboration with the Teatro de la Zarzuela, presents a series of recordings of zarzuela performances staged at this historic theatre in recent seasons. One of the key reasons behind this initiative is to familiarise audiences with this genre, which has been declared a Representative Expression of Intangible Cultural Heritage, with the ultimate aim of securing its recognition as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.</h4> About the Teatro de la zarzuela:Since its founding in 1856, the Teatro de la Zarzuela has been a meeting point for generations of audiences and all those drawn to Hispanic culture. It is the only theatre in the world where the Spanish lyrical genre has been continuously performed, with the finest works of its repertoire still staged alongside new creations that represent zarzuela in the 21st century.The zarzuela itinerary:Curated by the Teatro de la Zarzuela, this series includes some of the most outstand-ing productions of recent seasons, such as El barberillo de Lavapiés by Francisco Asenjo Barbieri, directed by Alfredo Sanzol with musical direction by José Miguel Pérez-Sierra; El sobre verde by Jacinto Guerrero, with musical direction by Cecilia Bercovich and stage direction by Nuria Castejón; and La del Manojo de Rosas by Pablo Sorozábal, in a historic production by Emilio Sagi, this time featuring Guillermo García Calvo conducting the ORCAM and the resident choir of the Teatro de la Zarzuela.Notably, El sobre verde was presented as part of one of the Teatro de la Zarzuela’s most successful and innovative projects: the Proyecto Zarza, which focuses on engaging younger audiences. Aimed at young people aged 12 to 18, this initiative features performances by young singers selected through a rigorous audition process.Tiempo de Zarzuela – Directed by Cristina Otero Roth"Tiempo de Zarzuela" explores the history, heritage, and contemporary landscape of the Spanish lyrical genre. This journey into the world of zarzuela reveals how, for over four cen-turies, it has preserved a vital part of the artistic and emotional memory of the Spanish-speaking world.The documentary is in Spanish with English subtitles in Baines Wing SR 1.14.

<h4>El Instituto Cervantes en colaboración con el Teatro de la Zarzuela, programa un ciclo de grabaciones de zarzuelas representadas en este coliseo en las últimas temporadas. Uno de los motivos que dan especial sentido a esta propuesta es la familiarización con este género que ha sido declarado Manifestación Representativa del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial, con el fin último de lograr el reconocimiento como patrimonio inmaterial de la humanidad por parte de la UNESCO.</h4><h4> </h4>Sobre el Teatro de la zarzuela:Desde su creación, en 1856, el Teatro de la Zarzuela es el punto de encuentro de distintas generaciones de público y de todos aquellos que se acercan a la cultura hispana. En este recinto, único en el mundo en el que siempre se ha cultivado el género lírico español, se siguen cantando y oyendo las mejores obras de su repertorio y estrenando lo que ya es la zarzuela del siglo XXI.El itinerario de zarzuela:Bajo el comisariado del Teatro de la Zarzuela en este ciclo se incluyen algunos de los títulos más atractivos de las últimas temporadas como son El barberillo de Lavapiés de Francisco Asenjo Barbieri, con dirección de escena de Alfredo Sanzol y musical de José Miguel Pérez-Sierra, El sobre verde de Jacinto Guerrero, con dirección musical de Cecilia Bercovich y escénica de Nuria Castejón, y La del Manojo de rosas de Pablo Sorozábal, en un histórico montaje de Emilio Sagi en esta ocasión con Guillermo García Calvo al frente de la ORCAM y del Coro titular del Teatro de la Zarzuela.Se da el caso de que El sobre verde se presentó en una de las propuestas más exitosas e interesantes del Teatro de la Zarzuela: el Proyecto Zarza, que temporada a temporada otorga especial importancia el público joven. Dirigido a un público juvenil de entre 12 y 18 años, los intérpretes son asimismo jóvenes cantantes elegidos a través de un largo y minucioso proceso de selección.Tiempo de Zarzuela – de Cristina Otero RothTiempo de zarzuela recorre la historia, el patrimonio y el panorama actual del género lírico español. Una incursión en el mundo de la zarzuela que desde hace cuatrocientos años atesora una parte de la memoria artística y emocional de todo el ámbito hispanohablante.El documental se proyectará en español con subtítulos en inglés en Baines Wing SR 1.14.
