About this Event

THE LABYRINTH

Starring Patsy Ferran, Doña Croll, Nathalie Armin, Olivia Williams and Nadine Marshall

In plays by Bryony Lavery, Timberlake Wertenbaker, Samantha Ellis, Natalie Haynes and Juliet Gilkes Romero.

Theseus, Hercules, Ulysses, Jason, Achilles... The island-hopping heroes of classical mythology leave a trail of women - queens, sorcerers, pioneers, poets and politicians - in their swaggering wake. Two thousand years ago, the Roman poet Ovid gave voice to those women in a series of fictional letters called The Heroines.

Inspired by Ovid, 15 leading British playwrights dramatise 15 Heroines. This exclusive online production in partnership with Digital Theatre is filmed live in our empty theatre. Delivered by an outstanding cast in three parts - The War, The Desert and The Labyrinth - 15 Heroines is a landmark theatrical event.

The Labyrinth is a series of five short plays inspired by the remarkable women who encountered Theseus and Jason. Ariadne (Patsy Ferran) gave Theseus everything, guiding him through the Labyrinth to kill her brother, the Minotaur. Later, Theseus married Phaedra (Doña Croll), who fell in love with Theseus’ son Hippolytus. Another of Theseus’ sons, Demophoon, is accused by his lover Phyllis (Nathalie Armin) of inheriting his father’s infidelity. Meanwhile, Jason is playing with fire. He has abandoned the vengeful queen of Lemnos, Hypsipyle (Olivia Williams), and is now living with Medea (Nadine Marshall) – the most powerful witch of the ancient world.

Ariadne is by Bryony Lavery (Frozen, Treasure Island - National Theatre); Phaedra is by Timberlake Wertenbaker (multi-award winning writer of Our Country’s Good); Phyllis by Samantha Ellis (Cling to Me Like Ivy); Hypsipyle is by Natalie Haynes (currently shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction for A Thousand Ships); Medea is by Juliet Gilkes Romero (The Whip - RSC).

BOOK NOW - only 250 tickets available per performance!

Don’t miss the other two parts, The War and The Desert.
