'Dreams & Autobiography': The 6FootStories Approach to Devising

About the workshop...

In this workshop we will be sharing some of our core techniques and the tips and tricks we’ve learned in nearly 10 years of making theatre. We will focus in particular on our use of dreams as a starting point for generating material, as well as how we weave semi-autobiographical content through our work. Reference will be made to our original shows The Number of the Beast, Soften the Grey and The Burgundy Boy, as well as to other artists’ work that is particularly inspiring to us, and ideas we currently have in development.

In the session we will explore:

- Our ‘Dreamweaving’ process, in which dreams are shared and smashed together to create starting points

- Mythmaking and stories within stories

- The rules of the world

- Our editorial process and options for writing collaboratively

- Excavating your own experience - and your subconscious - for endless material

This workshop is perfect for performers thinking of making their own work, students looking to explore new methods, or writers and directors looking to refresh how they begin to generate content.

About 6FootStories...

6FootStories are a touring theatre company founded by writer-performers Jake Hassam & Nigel Munson. Their work spans new writing, devising, reworked Shakespeare and numerous interactive and participatory projects. Their original work is fuelled by a desire to explore the fantastical and the extraordinary, and includes two-man tragi-comedy Soften the Grey, and semi-autobiographical one man show The Burgundy Boy. Their work has been seen at The Hope Theatre, Theatre503, BikeShed, Et Cetera Theatre, the Edinburgh Fringe and many other festivals and events across the country.

About the instructors...

The workshop will be run by co-artistic directors of 6FootStories, Jake Hassam & Nigel Munson. Between them they have taught at drama schools including East 15, Fourth Monkey, Italia Conti, Rose Bruford, Kingdom and the Oxford School of Drama. They have a wealth of knowledge and experience as theatre makers and as facilitators. They combine their classical actor training with the lessons they've learned through experimentation and play, and they can’t wait to share some of their practice in these online workshops.
