Institutions of Empire is a new seminar series convened by Adam Millar at the University of Leicester as part of his collaborative studentship. Inspired by his research on The Salvation Army, the seminar series seeks to explore ways in which institutions (broadly defined) influenced, or were influenced by, the British Empire. For the first event of the series Dr Mandy Banton will present a paper entitled The strong box of the empire’: can a 21st century institution escape its imperial past? Many of Britain’s cultural institutions – archives, museums, galleries and others – were established at the height of the British Empire. Pride in their institutional histories may not now be a major influence on their 21st century operations, but they continue to be constrained by the nature of their collections and by the legislation that underpins them. Focusing primarily on the UK National Archives, Banton outlines the role of education and outreach programmes in attracting non-traditional and more diverse audiences and considers the comparatively new concept of ‘decolonising’ the archives. She draws parallels with recent responses to the demands of the Rhodes Must Fall and Black Lives Matter campaigns, and with the Windrush generation scandal. Dr Mandy Banton is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, University of London, and a member of the Expert Group on Shared Archival Heritage of the International Council on Archives. She was formerly Principal Records Specialist (Diplomatic and Colonial) at The National Archives, UK.
