Design Council’s mission is to make life better by design. We work with people to create better places, better products and better processes, all of which lead to better performance. We commission pioneering evidence-based research, develop groundbreaking programmes and deliver influencing and policy work to demonstrate the power of design and how it impacts three key areas of the economy: business innovation, places and public services. Be inspired by our panel of speakers who have been leading initiatives that are supporting Londoners into good work and building strong communitiesDesigning London’s Recovery – puts design-led innovation at the heart of London’s recovery from COVID-19. This event is open to anyone who is interested in making a positive difference to the lives of Londoners. We’re looking for the most passionate, determined and creative people, organisations and teams to work with us to help turn their ideas into a reality.During the event you’ll hear from a panel of speakers that will share their experiences and insights of supporting Londoners into good work and building strong communities. We hope you will be inspired by some of the pioneering solutions and interventions already being tested in these areas and you’ll leave the event with thought leadership and challenge that will either enhance your existing idea or spark new ones!Speakers include:- Georgia Gould, Leader of the London Borough of Camden Georgia Gould was elected a Councillor for Kentish Town ward for Camden Council in 2010 at the age of 24. After holding a range of Cabinet portfolios, she became Leader in 2017 and as Leader has made citizen voice, participation and co-production a priority for the organisation. Under her leadership the Council held the country’s first Climate Emergency Citizens Assembly in 2019 to inform the response to our climate and ecological emergency. Georgia is Chair of London Councils and Co-Chair of the London Recovery Taskforce as well as a member of the London Economic Action Partnership (LEAP) Board. Her strategic design practice focuses on transformational design, design as form of inquiry and design intervention as forms of new imaginary. Her projects directly impact public space, working with local organisations, communities, government bodies and stakeholders. Torange has had 21 years in academic teaching in architecture and design. She is currently teaching on the course she wrote MA Design for Cultural Commons at London Metropolitan University where she is its course leader. She has taught at international universities such as UMA school of architecture in Sweden, unit leader at Royal College of Art - London as well as a visiting professor at Barbican and Guildhall school of Music and Drama. She is currently visiting professor at International University of Barcelona on the MA - emergency architecture. Torange recently delivered a TEDx talk on Harnessing the power of Civic Commons. As a teenager, Nat raised over £75,000 to rebuild a school in Mozambique. Then, in his first year of university, he founded the 180 Degrees Consulting (www.180dc.org) to help improve the effectiveness of non-profits and social enterprises, and develop the next generation of social impact leaders. He grew 180 Degrees into the world’s largest social impact consultancy, with 170 branches across 42 countries and over 5 million hours of consulting services provided. Following this, he did a PhD (DPhil) in Economics and Social Finance at Oxford, where his research focused on developing a new better way to finance education and healthcare to disadvantaged populations. As part of this PhD, Nat invented the FORTE (Financing Of Return To Employment) approach, which is a way to finance education (such as retraining) and healthcare (such as eye surgery) at no cost to individuals or governments, and without needing philanthropy. FORTE is a way to align social impact and financial returns at a systems level using a new type of public-private partnership that solves many of the challenges with both Social Impact Bonds (SIBs) and Income Share Agreements (ISAs). After 5 years of research on FORTE, Nat became so convinced that this model should exist in the world that he setup a new social venture by the same name (Forte) to make that happen. Forte is helping with the COVID-19 economic recovery by providing high-quality retraining at no cost to individuals who have lost their jobs.Nat is a Rhodes Scholar, Visiting Fellow at Princeton, Forbes 30 Under 30 list-maker, Australian State Young Achiever of the Year, Goldman Sachs Global Leader, World Economic Forum Global Shaper, winner of the Oxford Vice-Chancellor’s Social Impact Award, received the Highest Scoring Speech at the World Debating Championships, and is only-ever Two-Time Global Winner of the St Gallen Wings of Excellence Award. In addition to doing a DPhil, Nat completed an MBA and Masters in Development Economics at Oxford, where he was awarded the Saïd Prize for Top Oxford MBA Student and the Arthur Lewis Prize for Best Performance in Development Economics. In 2013, Amahra co-founded MAIA, an arts and social justice organisation, invested in the radical imagination and systemic transformation through infrastructure building, space creation, resource redistribution and cultural programming. In 2020, Amahra also founded the Black Land &amp; Spatial Justice Project with a campaign to raise funds investing in knowledge production, decolonial frameworks, and the reparative practice of our built, natural and virtual environments.
