About this event
Furrowed Residency night 1⋙ ⋙ Furrowed x Piano/Tape/Voice/Cello ⋘⋘
We are exceedingly pumped about this residency :: The brilliant turntablist, sound artist & musician Furrowed will embark on a deep exploration of his new instrument (modified turntables) featuring multi-collaborations and two back-to-back shows in one week!
From piano to tape loops, vocalists to scratch DJ, synth fantasies to cello magic and a really epic drummer - we can’t wait to hear the fruits of this residency!
During the first of two nights, sound-tattooing record-maker in residence, Furrowed will be performing new work exploring collaboration with Jules Arthur (Piano), R Elizabeth (Tape loops/electronics), Bunty (vocals /FX) and Alexander Painter (cello).
For anyone who loves weird grooves, records and other one-off sonic happenings - this is undoubtably for you.
Furrowed (Dylan Beattie) is a producer, lecturer and sound artist using circuit-bent record making equipment and electronics to create distinctive performances. As part of his unique approach, sound is ‘tattooed’ to blank discs by hand as multiple pickups trace modified surfaces. His sonic palette ranges from electronic and melodic tones, to hypnotic and cross-rhythms, analogue surface glitches and sound fragments as he inscribes sounds from various sources live to disc. Locked grooves provide structure as records are overlaid with new sounds and artefacts from tonearm behaviours. Expect lo-fi looping, clicks, pops and crunch as records are made, celebrated and destroyed live.
R Elizabeth – Tape /electronics
R ELIZABETH is the side project of artist and theorist Rachael Finney. Where her creative and academic practice examines histories and cultures of popular music, recording technologies and practices of production R Elizabeth sees the artist exploring her interest in magnetic tape from a different point of entry. Working somewhere between experimental electronics and pop music R Elizabeth often creates melodic hooks via a combination of tape collage and repetitive organ, layering low placed vocals that aim to present a continuous chorus. Working with a host of reel to reel machines and live splicing during performance R Elizabeth explores both the compositional potential of tape and the performance potential of the players themselves
Bunty – Voice /FX
Bunty is the avant-pop project of artist and vocal improviser, Kassia Zermon. Best known for pioneering underground experimental vocal loop shows and fronting UK leading Dub act Resonators. Bunty’s powerful one woman electro-orchestra combines the rawness of early M.I.A with the lyrical espionage of Tom Waits and a voice that can sound as sweet as Ella Fitzgerald. Live Bunty uses her synths, toys, ukulele, voice, effects pedals and a mash of real and made-up languages. She whispers, bellows, beatboxes, claps and stamps producing impressive vocal harmonies for her hook heavy tunes.
Alexander Painter - Cello
Alex is a composer, songwriter, sound designer and multi-instrumental performer. Using cello, saxophone, piano and voice, he employs experimental techniques, DIY effects units, tape manipulation and improvisation to create a unique palette of sounds. As a solo live performer and collaborator Alex works with artists such as Orlando Weeks, Gazelle Twin, William Doyle, Tony Njoku, Mike Lindsay and Anna B. Savage.
