A personal account of wartime and post-war life in Poland

Artist Lydia Bauman, remembering her mother, the writer Janina Bauman (née Lewinson, 1926-2009), considers the values, personality traits and strategies which enabled her to emerge from the horrors of the Warsaw ghetto and institutionalised antisemitism and state corruption of post-war Communist Poland, as the serene, gentle person she remained all her life, free of bitterness or rancour, and full of humanity. Fired up with the ideals of helping to build a new Polish People’s Republic, she nevertheless fell victim to State-led anti-Jewish propaganda which put an end to her meteoric career in Polish film industry, saw her give up her party membership, and leave Poland forever with her husband Zygmunt Bauman and three daughters in 1968. Lydia’s account is based on her mother&#x27;s own wartime and post-war diaries, later transformed into two autobiographical volumes: Winter in the Morning: A Young Girl&#x27;s Life in the Warsaw Ghetto and Beyond, (Virago Press 1986) and A Dream Of Belonging - My Years in Post War Poland ( Virago Press 1988 ), reprinted jointly as <a href="https://www.virago.co.uk/titles/janina-bauman/beyond-these-walls/9781844083190/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Beyond These Walls </a>(Virago Modern Classics 2006).Lydia Bauman arrived in the UK with her parents in 1971 after a three year stay in Israel, later studying Fine Art at Newcastle University and Art History at the Courtauld Institute of Art. Now based in London, she divides her time equally in pursuing her career as an <a href="http://lydiabauman.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">artist </a>and as an art history lecturer for adult audiences, including her own group (<a href="https://www.meetup.com/Art-for-the-Uninitiated/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Art for the Uninitiated</a>).
