TheSouth Georgia Associationwas formed to give voice to those who care for South Georgia, a remote mountainous island of exceptional natural beauty in the Southern Atlantic, with abundant wildlife both on the island and in the surrounding ocean. Uninhabited apart from two small research stations, a summer Museum, and a few government employees, it is an unspoilt wilderness with a fascinating heritage that is nonetheless environmentally vulnerable.Our Objectives:To encourage interest in, and concern for, the island of South GeorgiaTo encourage the study of South Georgia, and promote the conservation of its natural and cultural heritage.To promote contacts and encourage fellowship among those who have lived and worked in or around South Georgia, have visited or are interested in the Island.

Archaeology Fieldwork on South Georgia: Digging into Sealers' History and Exploring Possibilities

Marcus Brittain from the University of Cambridge, will talk about the Archaeology Expedition his team recently made to the island of South Georgia to investigate the historic sealing sites. Bob Burton from the South Georgia Association will talk about why fur seals were hunted so far away and what they were used for.This event is hosted jointly by the South Georgia Association, and the South Georgia Heritage Trust who part funded the project.
