The Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre (SEAC) is a cross-disciplinary, regionally-focused academic centre within the London School of Economics and Political Science.Building on the School’s deep academic and historical connections with Southeast Asia, SEAC seeks to foster world-leading academic and policy research with a focus on the Southeast Asian social and political landscape, guided by the Centre's core intersecting research themes of urbanisation, connectivity and governance.The Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre was established with the generous support of Professor Saw Swee Hock.

This opening session will consider collaborations between grant holders and local partners. How do we decolonise outdated research practices, and work with local partners, particularly when travel is not an option?Speaker and Chair Biographies<ul><li>Dakila Kim P. Yee is Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of the Philippines Visayas Tacloban College. His research is on the urban political ecology of disaster reconstruction in the Philippines after typhoon Haiyan, with focus on the production of urban spaces and the contentious politics that emerges in post-disaster contexts. He is part of the 2016 Asian Graduate Student Fellowship program at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore and he is a recipient of the 2017 Research Grants Programme of the Strengthening Human Rights and Peace Education in Southeast Asia/ASEAN (SHAPE-SEA) program based at Mahidol University, Thailand. His research appears in the following journals: Critical Asian Studies, Peace Review and the Journal of Sociology. He was also a part-time researcher for environmental and international development NGOs in the Philippines.</li><li>Dr Rita Padawangi is Associate Professor (Sociology) at Centre for University Core, Singapore University of Social Sciences. She received her PhD in sociology from Loyola University Chicago. Rita’s recent works focus on the humanistic aspects of city-making, particularly place-making in city neighborhoods, through collaborative approaches in research, teaching, and community engagement.</li><li>Dr Seb Rumsby is an early career fellow interested in everyday political economy, grassroots development, ethnoreligious politics, non-national histories and migration in South East Asia. Based at University of Warwick, his latest research project explores the lived experiences of undocumented Vietnamese migrants in the UK navigating the challenges of Covid-19. Seb is also passionate about translating critical research into empowering real-world impact; see more at https://sebrumsby.wordpress.com/.</li><li>Dylan Gaffney holds a BA Hons (2013) and MA (2016) in Anthropology from the University of Otago, Aotearoa/New Zealand. He was Research Coordinator at Southern Pacific Archaeological Research before beginning his PhD studies in Archaeology at the University of Cambridge. Most recently his work has explored the deep history of human societies in eastern Indonesia and northwest New Guinea. This work has involved establishing a collaborative research project between Cambridge and partner institutions in Indonesia and Papua. More information on this project can be found at www.raja-ampat-arch.com.</li><li>Prof Hyun Bang Shin is Professor of Geography and Urban Studies in the Department of Geography and Environment and Director of the Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre at the London School of Economics and Political Science. His research centres on the critical analysis of the political economic dynamics of speculative urbanisation, the politics of redevelopment and displacement, gentrification, housing, the right to the city, and mega-events as urban spectacles, with particular attention to cities in Asian countries such as South Korea, China, Vietnam and Singapore. His recent projects on ‘circulating urbanism and (Asian) capital’ have also brought him to work on Quito, Manila, Iskandar Malaysia, Kuwait City and London. Prof Shin has published widely in major international journals and contributed to numerous books on the above themes. He has coauthored Planetary Gentrification (Polity, 2016), edited Anti-Gentrification: What Is to Be Done (Dongnyok, 2017), and co-edited Global Gentrifications: Uneven Development and Displacement (Bristol University Press, 2015) and Neoliberal Urbanism, Contested Cities and Housing in Asia (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019). He is a board member (trustee) of the Urban Studies Foundation, and sits on the international advisory board of the journal Antipode as well as on the editorial board of the journals International Journal of Urban and Regional Research; Urban Geography; CITY; City, Culture and Society; Space and Environment [in Korea]; China City Planning Review [in China].</li></ul>
