The Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre (SEAC) is a cross-disciplinary, regionally-focused academic centre within the London School of Economics and Political Science.Building on the School’s deep academic and historical connections with Southeast Asia, SEAC seeks to foster world-leading academic and policy research with a focus on the Southeast Asian social and political landscape, guided by the Centre's core intersecting research themes of urbanisation, connectivity and governance.The Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre was established with the generous support of Professor Saw Swee Hock.

During this session, speakers will bring their insights around targeting journals and publishing success. Metrics and the importance and strategy of the REF will also be discussed.Speaker and Chair Biographies<ul><li>Originally from Kuala Lumpur, Dr Mulaika Hijjas is Senior Lecturer in South East Asian Studies at SOAS University of London, where she specialises in the Malay manuscript tradition but also teaches literature and cultural studies of the region. She held a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship at SOAS from 2009-14. Her monograph, Victorious Wives: The Disguised Heroine in Nineteenth-Century Malay Syair, was published by NUS Press in 2010, and her articles have appeared in Indonesia and the Malay World, The Journal of Southeast Asian Studies, South East Asia Research and Bijdragen tot de Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde, as well as in edited books. She was co-managing editor of Indonesia and the Malay World from 2016 to 2019.</li><li>Dr. Nicole CuUnjieng Aboitiz is a Research Fellow at Clare Hall, University of Cambridge, and the Executive Director of the Toynbee Prize Foundation. Immediately prior, Nicole was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University. Nicole earned her Ph.D. in Southeast Asian and International History at Yale University. Her first book, Asian Place, Filipino Nation: A Global Intellectual History of the Philippine Revolution, 1887-1912, was published by Columbia University Press in 2020. Her broad research interests centre on global intellectual history and Southeast Asian environmental, cultural, and social history.</li><li>Dr. Loretta Lou is Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Macau and Visiting Fellow in Anthropology at the London School of Economics. Trained in Anthropology (DPhil Oxford, 2017), her research interests lie in the areas of environment, health, wellbeing, social movements, and ethics in Asia. In addition to her academic work, since 2016, she has been serving as a Commissioning Editor at Amsterdam University Press. The series that are under her care include: New Mobilities in Asia; Environment and Society in Asia; Consumption and Sustainability in Asia; Social Studies in Asian Medicine.</li><li>Prof Hyun Bang Shin (Event Chair) is Professor of Geography and Urban Studies in the Department of Geography and Environment and Director of the Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre at the London School of Economics and Political Science. His research centres on the critical analysis of the political economic dynamics of speculative urbanisation, the politics of redevelopment and displacement, gentrification, housing, the right to the city, and mega-events as urban spectacles, with particular attention to cities in Asian countries such as South Korea, China, Vietnam and Singapore. His recent projects on ‘circulating urbanism and (Asian) capital’ have also brought him to work on Quito, Manila, Iskandar Malaysia, Kuwait City and London. Prof Shin has published widely in major international journals and contributed to numerous books on the above themes. He has coauthored Planetary Gentrification (Polity, 2016), edited Anti-Gentrification: What Is to Be Done (Dongnyok, 2017), and co-edited Global Gentrifications: Uneven Development and Displacement (Bristol University Press, 2015) and Neoliberal Urbanism, Contested Cities and Housing in Asia (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019). He is a board member (trustee) of the Urban Studies Foundation, and sits on the international advisory board of the journal Antipode as well as on the editorial board of the journals International Journal of Urban and Regional Research; Urban Geography; CITY; City, Culture and Society; Space and Environment [in Korea]; China City Planning Review [in China].</li></ul>
