The Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre (SEAC) is a cross-disciplinary, regionally-focused academic centre within the London School of Economics and Political Science.Building on the School’s deep academic and historical connections with Southeast Asia, SEAC seeks to foster world-leading academic and policy research with a focus on the Southeast Asian social and political landscape, guided by the Centre's core intersecting research themes of urbanisation, connectivity and governance.The Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre was established with the generous support of Professor Saw Swee Hock.

In this session, speakers will discuss their approaches to impact, providing case studies and discussion with a particular focus on digital impact and the methods to achieve this.Speaker and Chair Biographies<ul><li>Laurie Parsons is a Lecturer in Human Geography at Royal Holloway, University of London. His work examines the contested politics of climate change on socio-economic inequalities, patterns of work and mobilities. Strongly committed to policy engagement, Laurie has conducted large-scale projects examining inequalities in Cambodia’s economic development for Transparency International, Plan International, Save the Children, CARE International, ActionAid, the IDRC and the Royal University of Phnom Penh, among others. His first book, Going Nowhere Fast: Mobile Inequality in the Age of Translocality was published by Oxford University Press in 2020.</li><li>Jason Vincent A. Cabañes is Associate Professor in Communication at De La Salle University (DLSU) in Manila, The Philippines. He has a PhD from the University of Leeds, UK. He is incoming chair of the Ethnicity and Race in Communication Division of the International Communication Association and is associate editor of Communication, Culture and Critique. His primary research focus is on the mediation of cross-cultural intimacies and solidarities. He also does work on digital labour in the global South, including on digital disinformation production. In relation to the latter, he was Principal Investigator (PI) for the recently concluded project “Between global aspirations and local realities: A viable future for digital labour in Philippines regional cities”, funded by the DLSU University Research Coordinating Office. He was also PI for the project "The digital hijacking of deep stories: On the narratives of disinformation in Philippines society”, funded by the Consortium on Democracy and Disinformation. His works from these projects appear in top-tier journals such as Social Media + Society, Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, and The International Journal of Communication.</li><li>Dr Charlie Rumsby is a research Fellow at the Centre for Trust Peace and Social Relations, Coventry University with research interests in youth, children, belonging and citizenship. Geographically she focuses on mainland Southeast Asia, where she has conducted research with the children of Vietnamese descent in Cambodia since 2014. Charlie trained in anthropology at London’s School of Oriental and African Studies and Goldsmiths University and went on to conduct an interdisciplinary ethnography at Coventry University for her PhD thesis. She has expertise in visual methodologies and is currently creating an ethnographic short film on Christian missionaries in Cambodia funded by ASEASUK Digital Impact Award. Find out more about her research here www.charlierumsby.com </li><li>Professor Deirdre McKay (Chair) is Professor in Social Geography and Environmental Politics at Keele University, and Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Studies UK (ASEAS UK). Prof McKay’s research draws on both social/cultural geography and social anthropology to explore people's place-based experiences of globalisation and development. Her fieldwork is in areas of the global South and also with migrant communities from developing areas who have moved into the world's major cities. Much of her work has been conducted with people who originate in indigenous villages in the northern Philippines.</li></ul>
