The Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre (SEAC) is a cross-disciplinary, regionally-focused academic centre within the London School of Economics and Political Science.Building on the School’s deep academic and historical connections with Southeast Asia, SEAC seeks to foster world-leading academic and policy research with a focus on the Southeast Asian social and political landscape, guided by the Centre's core intersecting research themes of urbanisation, connectivity and governance.The Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre was established with the generous support of Professor Saw Swee Hock.

This session will look at how researchers approach their work in a resilient way, and how they can control their emotions when working in the field.Speaker and Chair Biographies<ul><li>Joanna Octavia is a PhD Candidate at the Warwick Institute for Employment Research, United Kingdom, researching on internet use, collective bargaining, and protest movements in the informal sector of developing countries. Previously, she was a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and a Senior Public Policy Associate at Uber in Indonesia. Joanna holds a Master of Science in Comparative Politics from the London School of Economics and Political Science. In 2018, she was one of the two official representatives of Indonesia to the Y20 Summit – the official youth forum of the G20.</li><li>Dr Adam Tyson, is Associate Professor of Southeast Asian Politics, University of Leeds. Adam has a longstanding interest in Indonesian politics, and a commitment to fieldwork, where sound conclusions are (usually) derived from evidence gathered in the field.</li><li>Professor Catherine Allerton is a specialist in the anthropology of island Southeast Asia, with research interests in children and childhoods, migration, kinship, place and landscape. She has conducted ethnographic fieldwork in a two-placed village in Flores, Indonesia and in the capital city of Sabah, East Malaysia. Catherine’s current research explores experiences of exclusion, belonging and potential statelessness amongst the children of Indonesian and Filipino refugees and migrants in Sabah, East Malaysia. This involved a year of ESRC-funded fieldwork in the city of Kota Kinabalu with children aged 8-17. A book on this project, provisionally entitled Impossible Children, is currently in progress, as are articles on intergenerational care in migrant families, and children’s experiences of refusals connected with being ‘Filipino’ in Sabah. Catherine has recently published Children: Ethnographic Encounters, an edited volume that vividly explores experiences of fieldwork with children in ten different cultural contexts. </li><li>Professor Deirdre McKay (Chair) is Professor in Social Geography and Environmental Politics at Keele University, and Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Studies UK (ASEAS UK). Prof McKay’s research draws on both social/cultural geography and social anthropology to explore people&#x27;s place-based experiences of globalisation and development. Her fieldwork is in areas of the global South and also with migrant communities from developing areas who have moved into the world&#x27;s major cities. Much of her work has been conducted with people who originate in indigenous villages in the northern Philippines.</li></ul>
