Gender, Place and Race: Intersections in the Art of Elsa James

Estuary 2021 is the second edition of the large-scale arts festival that celebrates the lives, landscapes and histories of the spectacular Thames Estuary.A mix of large scale and intimate visual art, literature, music and film, the festival celebrates culture, creativity, recovery and renewal. Alongside an online discussion and events programme, the physical programme will explore and respond to powerful themes resonant to the Estuary, from the climate, to rebellion and imperial legacy.  Re-framed in light of Covid-19, the festival invites visitors to take an epic walk along the stunning coastline of South Essex and North Kent encountering contemporary artworks and performance within the estuary landscape, historic sites and coastal towns.Estuary 2021 is led by a partnership between estuary-based arts organisations, Metal (South Essex) and Cement Fields (North Kent).www.estuaryfestival.com@EstuaryFestival

Join Jon Blackwood for an in-conversation event with artist, Elsa James to celebrate the publication his new publication, Gender, Place and Race: Intersections in the art of Elsa James. This new text is the result of an ongoing conversation on the artist’s studio practice since 2019 and takes an in-depth look at three works. Jon Blackwood is a reader in contemporary art at Gray&#x27;s School of Art, Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. His research is based on the interactions of regionalism, peripherality, national identity, and contemporary art. Jon has also worked extensively in the former Yugoslavia and post-Soviet spaces considering notions of cultural ecology and post-socialist transition.Elsa James is a British African-Caribbean, conceptual artist and activist living in Essex since 1999. Her work intervenes in the overlapping discourses of race, gender, diaspora and belonging. Her black British identity ignites her interdisciplinary and research-based practice, located within the fields of contemporary performance, text and language-based art, socio-political and socially engaged art; occasionally dabbling with drawing and paintingThe publication has been supported by Arts Council England, Firstsite Gallery and Metal.It will be available to download as an e-book and can be purchased from the <a href="https://firstsite.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Firstsite Gallery shop</a>.
