Designing London’s Recovery Launch Event: Brief Three

Design Council’s mission is to make life better by design. We work with people to create better places, better products and better processes, all of which lead to better performance. We commission pioneering evidence-based research, develop groundbreaking programmes and deliver influencing and policy work to demonstrate the power of design and how it impacts three key areas of the economy: business innovation, places and public services. We bring together non-designers and designers from grassroots to government and share with them our design expertise to transform the way they work.

Designing London’s Recovery – puts design-led innovation at the heart of London’s recovery from COVID-19.

The Recovery Programme, overseen by the London Recovery Board, identified one grand challenge to restore confidence in the city, minimise the impact on communities and build back the city’s economy and society, following a missions-based approach to deliver the programme through nine Recovery missions You can find out more about the <a href="https://www.london.gov.uk/coronavirus/londons-recovery-coronavirus-crisis" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Recovery Programme here</a>. This Roundtable convenes experts to share experiences and insights on Brief Three of the programme which focus on: A Green New Deal and High Streets for All. This event is open to anyone who is interested in making a positive difference to the lives of Londoners. We’re looking for the most passionate, determined and creative people, organisations and teams to work with us to help turn their ideas into a reality. During the event you’ll hear from a panel of speakers that will share their experiences and insights of creating thriving, inclusive and resilient high streets and town centres as well as ensuring London becomes a zero-carbon, zero pollution city by 2030 and a zero-waste city by 2050. We hope you will be inspired by some of the pioneering solutions and interventions already being tested in these areas and you’ll leave the event with thought leadership and challenge that will either enhance your existing idea or spark new ones! Speakers:Patricia Brown - Director, CentralPatricia advises civic and business leaders on the dynamics of urban change, working across the public and private sectors on people-centred real estate development, regeneration and economic development and is valued for her ability to bring together the different elements and people that are essential in shaping successful places. This is based on her wealth of experience in thinking about, influencing and improving London, pioneering a number of ground-breaking initiatives that have put people and liveability at the heart of the city’s successful urban evolution – including campaigns and projects to get investment in quality, walkable, public space, alongside the development of London’s BIDs and the Legible London concept.Twitter: <a href="https://twitter.com/patricialondon" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">@patricialondon</a>Susie Hyden - Associate Director, Gort ScottSusie is Associate Director of London-based architecture and urban design practice Gort Scott. She has been involved in developing various research projects including High Streets Adaptive Strategies, a collaborative report for the GLA responding to threats to London’s high streets. Susie has expertise in delivering high street regeneration projects including adaptive re-use and meanwhile projects such as Central Parade in Walthamstow, and strategic masterplans to strengthen connectivity and local identity, such as public realm improvements in Colliers Wood Town Centre. She has developed a specialism in market design and strategies, having delivered market projects in Brixton, Walthamstow, and Oxford. She passionately believes that innovative design enriches people’s lives and grows out of its particular context and a positive, collaborative design process.Susie has worked at a number of other design-led practices including Long and Kentish, Duggan Morris Architects (now Morris &amp; Company / Mary Dugan Architects) and Turner Castle (now Turner.Works). She has worked on refurbishment and new-build projects at all RIBA design stages in a wide variety of different sectors including Mixed-use Commercial and Residential buildings, Civic Buildings, Galleries, Transport and Education projects.Susie trained as an architect at Cambridge University and the Bartlett (UCL), qualifying in 2006. A designer and urbanist, his previous design leadership roles include Arup, Future Cities Catapult, Fabrica, SITRA and the BBC. He&#x27;s lived and worked in UK, Australia, Finland, Italy and Sweden. Dan is Professor at Oslo School of Architecture and Design, Visiting Professor at UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose and Design Academy Eindhoven, and Adjunct Professor at RMIT University, Melbourne. He is a member of the UN Council on Urban Initiatives, a Design Advocate for the Mayor of London, and a Trustee of Participatory City Foundation.Twitter: <a href="https://twitter.com/cityofsound" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">@cityofsound</a>Pam Warhurst - Chair, Incredible EdiblePamela Warhurst is a community leader, activist and environment worker best known for founding the voluntary gardening initiative, Incredible Edible, in Todmorden, West Yorkshire. Warhurst is currently Chair of Incredible Edible and was formerly Chair of Forestry Commission Great Britain, which is the largest land management commission in the country. She was also Chair of The Incredible Aquagarden, a social enterprise demonstrating and teaching urban farming (dissolved) and Chair of Handmade Parade a leading community arts enterprise, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts &amp; Manufacturing and is an Honorary Fellow of Landscape Institute and Leeds Becket University. She has an MA in Economics from Manchester University. In 2005, she took the Chair of Pennine Prospects, a regeneration company focusing on the South Pennine region of the United Kingdom.In the New Year Honours 2005 Warhurst was appointed as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), for services to the environment. She has been both Deputy Chair and Acting Chair of the Countryside Agency, a Labour council leader on the Calderdale Council, and a board member of Yorkshire Forward.
