This panel discussion asks the question: What role does photography have to play in communicating the climate crisis?

Communicating a Crisis is an online panel discussion chaired by Mariama Attah, Curator from Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool. Featuring Joycelyn Longdon from Climate in Colour and West Coast Photo commissioned artists Mishka Henner and Vaseem Bhatti on how they use the power of photography and visual culture to communicate the immediacy of the impending Climate Crisis. The event includes a short presentation from each speaker, and an audience Q+A.Further Information about the SpeakersMariama Attah is a photography curator, writer and lecturer with a particular interest in overlooked visual histories, and understanding how photography and visual culture can be used to amplify underrepresented voices. Mariama is curator of Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool. She was previously Assistant Editor of Foam Magazine. Prior to this, she was Curator of Photoworks, where she was responsible for developing and curating programs and events including Brighton Photo Biennial and was also Commissioning and Managing Editor of the yearly magazine Photoworks Annual.Mishka Henner has been described by some as a modern-day Duchamp for his appropriation of image-rich technologies including Google Earth, Google Street View, and YouTube. He was awarded the ICP Infinity Award for Art by the International Center of Photography, New York, and shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize at the Photographers’ Gallery, London. Henner has exhibited at MoMA New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Turner Contemporary Margate, Hasselblad Foundation Goterborg, and Örebro Konsthall amongst others. His works have been collected by Arts Council England, V &amp; A Museum, New York Public Library and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Belgian born, he lives and works in Manchester, England. Vaseem Bhatti, born in Glasgow, is of Indian/Pakistani descent, and currently lives and works in both Manchester and Cornwall. Commissions include work for artists Banksy, Futurefarmers, Etoy, and musicians MF Doom, Gruf Rhys and Danger Mouse, and organisations such as The Modernists Society, Warp Records and Pentagram.Joycelyn Longdon is the founder of <a href="https://www.climateincolour.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">ClimateinColour</a>, an online education platform and community making climate conversations more diverse and accessible. She’s also a postgraduate student at Cambridge looking at the application of AI to Climate Change, with a focus on centering indigenous knowledge into algorithms. Joycelyn does a fantastic job of translating the complex research and science behind intersectional environmentalism and climate change through easy-to-understand graphics and resources on Instagram and beyond.
