Overview of the session: What do we mean by ‘Brownfield’?   Introducing the challenges facing Brownfield sites. How to get the most out of the information gathered on your sites in Brownfield Registers. Overview of a range of common Brownfield challenges to consider, order of tasks, costs, timescales, and possible solutions: •	Boundaries, Access and Neighbours:  Topographical surveys, trespass and relationship management. •	In the ground constraints: Mineral rights, contaminants, remediation, geology and archaeology. •	On the ground constraints:  Ecology - protected species, invasive species, Open Mosaic Habitats, Biodiversity Net Gain. Buildings – past, present and future and the cost implication. •	Infrastructure and Legal Issues: Access challenges and ransom, utilities, drainage, restrictive covenants. •	Engaging stakeholders and establishing a shared vision: Councillor expectations vs community, utilities providers, existing users, neighbours, other public bodies and agencies. •	The ‘art of the possible’: Designing the right scheme in view of the site and the local market. •	All brought to life with successful examples and lessons learnt from a range of sites, along with a case study to work through with Homes England staff. •	How to identify support, including using Homes England Frameworks. Audience: For local government officers, with little or no recent experience of taking Brownfield sites to development, who would like to understand where to start, what to expect and how to be an informed client when appointing consultants to support your work. Presenters: Ross Nicholson (Head of Estates Management), Lisa Palframan (Senior Technical Manager - Environment) and Dr Richard Boyle (Senior Technical Manager) from the Homes England Technical Centre of Excellence, Laura Bell (Senior Partnership and Business Development Manager) from Homes England’s Markets, Partners and Places Directorate.
