Join Philip Seargeant (Open University) for a discussion about free speech in the age of technology-medicated communication.

The talk will look at how current and future developments in communications technology are likely to impact the ideals and practicalities around free speech. Much of the concern around the influence of modern digital communications technologies on society has focused on phenomena such as surveillance capitalism, whereby our interactions, both with each other and our devices, generate data which can be used to track and influence our behaviour, with serious implications for civil liberties issues. But an equally important concern is how the growing use of Al, along with the extensive power and reach of the platforms which, in effect, govern the use of these technologies, are likely to have on the resources we use to actually communicate, and the implications this might have for freedom of expression. The talk will give an overview of some of the key issues of concern in this area. -------This event is a Community Seminar Series event hosted by Robert Gordon University&#x27;s School of Applied Social Studies.
