The online course 'Gowns and Tiaras: The Representation of Royal Power in Spain' examines how the Spanish monarchy has been visually and symbolically represented from the medieval period to the present day. Across six sessions, we will explore the evolving imagery, rituals and iconography associated with royal authority in various historical contexts.Beginning with the medieval kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula, we will trace the impact of Renaissance ideals under the Catholic Monarchs and Philip II, the ceremonial magnificence of the Baroque court, the political and cultural transformations of the 18th and 19th centuries, and the modernisation of the monarchy in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The course concludes with an analysis of King Juan Carlos I, considering the role and image of the contemporary monarchy and its place in modern Spain.Through art, ceremony and public representation, we will investigate how royal power has been communicated, reinforced and adapted over time. 1) Forging Empires: The Kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula in the Middle AgesThis session explores the historical and cultural evolution of the various territories within the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages, tracing their development from kingdoms to expansive empires.Dr Emma Luisa Cahill Marrón (2025 Yale Center for British Art Residential Fellow)2) Renaissance Spain: An Empire Where the Sun Never SetsThis class examines the rise of the Spanish monarchy in the 15th and 16th centuries into a world power, ushering in the first globalisation process of the modern era.Dr Emma Luisa Cahill Marrón (2025 Yale Center for British Art Residential Fellow)3) Baroque Drama: Austerity and Excess in the Seventeenth CenturyAs Spain’s global power declined in the 17th century, the image of the Spanish monarchy developed in isolation from other Western European nations. Focusing on court fashion, this session examines the most iconic era of the Spanish royal image, culminating in the painter Diego Velázquez’s 1656 masterpiece, Las Meninas.Amanda Wunder (Professor of History and Art History, Lehman College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York)4) The Bourbon Consolidation: Enlightenment, Prosperity and Global BalanceThe reigns of Ferdinand VI, Charles III and Charles IV marked the definitive consolidation of the Bourbon dynasty in Spain, during a period of significant economic growth and broad social and cultural expansion shaped by Enlightenment ideals. This era laid the foundations for Spain’s subsequent industrial development. The 18th century was also the period of greatest balance and prosperity for Spain’s overseas provinces in the Americas and Asia, which, far from being mere colonies, were integral parts of the empire. Within this framework, Spain maintained its status as the foremost geographical and economic power of the time.Dativo Salvia y Ocaña (Historian, author and expert on European royalty)5) 1813–1931: A Tumultuous yet Splendid CenturyFrom Ferdinand VII’s struggle to adapt the monarchy to the liberal regime after centuries of absolutism, to Isabella II navigating power as a woman in a male-dominated political world; from Alfonso XII’s role in stabilising the monarchy, to Alfonso XIII’s transformation of the institution into a modern monarchy that bridged the 19th and 20th centuries—this period saw Spain emerge into a Silver Age following the loss of its last overseas territories.Roger Bastida (Art historian, author and historical advisor for film and television)6) Spain: A Successful Experiment in Monarchical RestorationHalf a century after the restoration of the Spanish monarchy in 1975, recent history has shown that, despite hardships, challenges and occasional missteps, the institution remains firmly established in Spain. Two reigns—those of King Juan Carlos I and King Felipe VI—have made it possible to look towards the heir, the Princess of Asturias, as a future queen ready to lead in the new times ahead.Ricardo Mateos Sainz de Medrano (Historian, author and expert on European royalty) The course will take place in English.
