Event description:

The UK faces two pressures which are often viewed as competing: the housing supply crisis, which has resulted in increased rents and prices for millions across the country, and the urgent need to reach net zero emissions. The UK’s housing stock comprises of 20% of our national housing emissions, and each newbuild home in the UK is responsible for considerably higher emissions than comparable countries due to our choices of building materials and construction skills.

Reducing the amount we emit from the construction process will be crucial as we strive to reach net zero and solve the housing crisis, and how we do this will be a crucial question for Labour going forwards.

This event will explore the following questions:

  • How can Labour reconcile its housing and net zero targets?
  • What role will the Future Homes Standard play in decreasing out emissions from newbuild homes?
  • How can net zero be embedded into our planning policies locally and nationally?
  • How can Labour encourage the use of timber in housebuilding?
  • What role do Modern Methods of Construction play in lowering emissions from housebuilding?

Format:

The event will begin with 5-7 minute contributions from the panellists, followed by some questions from the chair, and a short Q&A from the audience, collected in batches of three. The event will finish promptly at 12:00pm.

Invited to the panel are:

  • Katie White MP, Parliamentary Private Secretary at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (Invited)
  • Harpreet Uppal MP, Parliamentary Private Secretary at the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government (Invited)
  • Mete Coban, Deputy Mayor of London for Environment and Energy
  • Jay Morton, Director at Bell Phillips Architects
  • Andrew Oriss, Director at the Confederation of Timber Industries
