Event description:

For too long the 5.3 million leaseholders in England and Wales have been waiting for meaningful reform to the antiquated leasehold system. After years of delay by the Conservative Governments and a rushed-through Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act, the Government has acted with speed, setting out a timeline for reform and a Commonhold White Paper to end the construction of new commonhold flats and establish a transitionary process for commonhold.

Ahead of the publication of the Leasehold and Commonhold Reform Bill, more information is needed about how Labour will deliver for existing leaseholders in particular, with widespread anxieties about a ‘two tier market’ emerging after the introduction of mandatory commonhold.

This event will address the following questions:

  • How can Labour ensure that transitions from leasehold to commonhold property are as smooth as possible?
  • How can other routes for leaseholders to gain greater control over their homes, such as buying out freeholds and the Right to Manage, be invigorated?
  • How can Labour prevent a ‘two tier market’ emerging between leasehold and commonhold?
  • What can Labour MPs do to represent the interests of leaseholders in Parliament?

Format:

The event will begin with 5-7 minute contributions from the panellists, followed by some questions from the chair, and a short Q&A from the audience, collected in batches of three. The event will finish promptly at 14:00.

Invited to the panel are:

  • Rachel Blake MP, Co-Chair of Labour for Leaseholders
  • Martin Hilditch, Editor of Inside Housing (Invited)
  • David Pinto-Duschinsky MP, Co-Chair of Labour for Leaseholders
  • Yuan Yang MP, Early and Woodley (invited)
  • Alex Toal, Editor of Red Brick (Chair)
