The Consulate General of Spain in Edinburgh and the Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival invite you to the roundtable: 50 Years of Democracy in Spain: Perils and Possibilities for a Changing Future Spain commemorates the 50th anniversary of the reestablishment of Democracy after the death of Franco in 1975 and the subsequent social and political Transition. This historic milestone marked the beginning of a new contemporary democratic system. Fifty years on, it is time to reflect on the lessons learnt.In 2025, democracy around the world faces persistent challenges and new threats, including growing inequalities, political polarisation, disinformation, and attempts to undermine a free press. All the rights gained—once thought to be secured—are now at risk.This roundtable will be a dialogue that invites us to look back and reflect on where we come from and where we are headed, guided by Professor Nuria Capdevila-Argüelles and Professor Oliver Escobar.The roundtable will finish at 19:30 and will be followed by a reception.Presentation: Consul General Santiago MirallesModerator: Marian Aréchaga
