We welcome you to the Manchester School of Architecture’s MA Architecture + Urbanism annual 2021 symposium.

The architecture profession is by definition optimistic. Architects are trained to imagine a better world and the discipline is one that is driven by the desire for context sensitive change. The shaping of urban spaces is, however, more complex, interdisciplinary and political than ever. The true ability to re-work modes of living, working and learning only emerges in collaboration. After more than a year of contending with the coronavirus pandemic lockdowns and social distancing has affected every part of our lives. Life in 2021 is a world away from the one we used to know. The possibility of universal basic income, four-day working week, the appropriation of high streets and the future of the office are but a few conversations being had now that will have a significant impact on the urban landscape, supplementing long term trials of the climate emergency, accessibility to affordable housing et al. Architects and urbanists have a role to play in these discussions. This symposium responds to some of the most urgent societal challenges we continue to face in post-pandemic urban contexts. The talks focus on re-thinking the urban and envisioning the future of city centres that might no longer predominantly need to be designed for the worker and the commuter. How to deal with places that are heritage in the making or can we return to the status quo? Instead of pushing a vision of what the world will or should be this afternoon will deal with what the future could be. Invited speakers from interdisciplinary backgrounds will be re-evaluating the prominent position that work and education have in our cities and exploring possibilities for more inclusive and livable urban centres. The symposium will offer an open, inspirational and yet critical platform for collaborative re-working of the future city. The speakers are the Director of Open City and Open House Worldwide, Phin Harper, Marco Casagrande, Principal of the Casagrande Laboratory, Ojay McDonald, from the Association of Town and City Management and Daniel Elsea from Allies and Morrison.
