This event is in partnership with The Hyde Group.

Event description:

The conditions faced by the UK’s four million social housing tenants have been an increasing focus of the media and of policymaking by successive Governments. New regulations for building safety and standards are a crucial step forward, but does not erase persistent issues with stock condition, including damp & mould, leaks and building safety issues.

As housing associations and local authorities look to improve stock conditions in challenging financial conditions, the Government has already been keen to support with additional grant funding for newbuild, a ten-year rent settlement, and additional funding through the Warm Homes Programme.

This event will address the following questions:

  • How can Labour deliver improved stock conditions for social tenants?
  • How will new standards like Awaab’s Law be embedded into the sector?
  • After the Spending Review, what additional support can government provide to registered providers?
  • How can tenants be included in the conversation to ensure that their interests are represented?
  • What role can innovation play in helping to drive up better standards?

Format:

The event will begin with 5-7 minute contributions from the panellists, followed by some questions from the chair, and a short Q&A from the audience, collected in batches of three. The event will finish promptly at 12:00.

Invited to the panel are:

  • Neal Ackral, Chief Operating Officer of Hyde Group
  • Dawn Butler MP, Member of Parliament for Brent East
  • Florence Eshalomi MP, Chair of the Housing, Communities and Local Government Select Committee (Invited)
  • Cllr Adam Hug, Leader of Westminster City Council
  • Cllr Asma Islam, London Borough of Tower Hamlets (Chair)
