This event is being held in partnership with NHBC.
Event description:
Solving the skills shortage across the housing sector is a fundamental challenge and a unique opportunity.
Delivering the Government's necessary plan for 1.5 million homes will require a generational recruitment of new workers, including 20,000 bricklayers, 8,000 carpenters, and 24,000 electricians. Meanwhile, skills shortages also extend to maintaining existing stock, particularly as new professional standards come into the housing association and managing agent sectors.
Addressing the skills shortage will not only be essential to solving the housing crisis, but can provide tens of thousands of well-paying jobs for British workers to combat the country's productivity and cost-of-living crisis.
This event will explore the following questions:
- What more does the Government need to do to address the skills shortage in housing?
- What role will technical colleges and skills hubs play in upskilling the next generation of workers?
- What do employers need to do to in order to attract and retain new talent into the sector?
- What reform of the Apprenticeship Levy is needed to maximise value-for-money?
- What contribution can the broader housing industry make to the Government's plans?
- What more should the housing sector be doing to train apprentices?
Format:
The event will begin with 7-10 minute contributions from the panellists, followed by some questions from the chair, and a short Q&A from the audience, collected in batches of three. The event will finish promptly at 6pm.
Also invited to the panel are:
- Gareth Thomas MP, Minister for Small Business (Invited)
- David Cambell, Chief Operating Officer at NHBC
- Lola McEvoy MP, Co-Chair of Labour Growth Group (Chair) (Invited)
