How can Labour’s housing policy address rural and coastal poverty? How can Labour incentivise social and affordable housebuilding?

Event description:Rural and coastal rural and coastal poverty in the UK has deepened over the past two decades, driven by austerity, economic decline, and lack of infrastructure. Coastal towns face entrenched deprivation from deindustrialisation, low‑wage seasonal work, ageing populations, poor education, and weak housing markets Environmental pressures—including inadequate flood defences—exacerbate vulnerability in rural and coastal areas. Despite some regeneration, inequalities endure: many communities remain trapped in low resilience and economic marginalisation.The most recent general election not only saw a considerable upswing in the number of Labour MPs representing rural and coastal areas. These are areas which have distinctly different needs than the urban and ex-urban seats which Labour is used to representing, and delivering for them will be crucial for Labour to maintain their majority at the next election.This event will address the following questions:<ul><li>How can Labour’s housing policy address rural and coastal poverty?</li><li>How can Labour incentivise social and affordable housebuilding in these areas?</li><li>What role do short-term lets play? Do they need encouraging to help thriving economies or regulating to free up housing stock for locals?</li><li>What role can Labour leaders in rural and coastal areas play in addressing these issues?</li></ul>Format:The event will begin with 5-7 minute contributions from the panellists, followed by some questions from the chair, and a short Q&amp;A from the audience, collected in batches of three.
