Craftspace and Crafting the Commons Research Network warmly invite you to attend &#x27;Crafting Worlds in Common&#x27; a half day symposium followed by a guided virtual tour of We are Commoners exhibition.

The Commons, Enclosures, and Resistance and Red Round Globe Hot Burning: A Tale at the Crossroads of Commons and Closure, Race and Class, Love and Terror, and Kate and Ned Despard.Key contributor: Torange Khonsari , a researcher in the field of Cultural and Civic Commons.Contributors:Exhibiting artists; Alinah Azadeh, Justine Boussard (Common Ground), Ben Coode-Adams (Blackwater Polytechnic), Lise Bjorne Linnert, Deirdre Nelson and Rosina Santana and curator/director of Craftspace Deirdre Figueiredo, MBE.Academic network members; Patrick Bresnihan (Maynooth University), Leila Dawney (University of Exeter), Jeremy Kidwell (University of Birmingham), Justin Marshall (Northumbria University), Naomi Millner (University of Bristol), Dimitris Papadopoulos (University of Nottingham), Giuseppe Salvia (University College London) and Amy Twigger Holroyd (Nottingham Trent University).The Crafting the Commons network, which is led by Dr Amy Twigger Holroyd and Dr Leila Dawney in collaboration with Craftspace, is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.The keynote will be followed by four panel discussions on the themes of: Searching for the commons, Commoning in an individualised world, Creating commons and Common futures. Short films will be screened before and in between panels. Recently, the idea of the commons has made a comeback in the humanities and the social sciences, as well as in contemporary forms of activism. This idea, previously associated with the back to the land movements of the 1960s and 70s, with debates over resource management or with the pursuits of social and legal historians, has gathered traction both as a way of imagining ecological and political futures, and of finding ways to live in an increasingly privatised and and austerity-blighted world. At the same time, an array of community-oriented craft initiatives that draw on the politics of the commons have emerged, including makerspaces, online networks and repair shops. Enabling peer-to-peer exchange of knowledge, tools and materials, they disrupt industrial capitalist production and resist the individualism of intellectual capital and consumer culture. Their ethos of openness places them within the realm of the commons and offers a practical context for experimenting with new ways of making worlds in common.The <a href="https://commoners.craftspace.co.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Crafting the Commons Research Network</a> has informed the development of Craftspace&#x27;s national touring exhibition &#x27;We are Commoners: creative acts of commoning&#x27;. Featuring UK and international artists, the projects exhibited represent ideas and resources to inspire ‘acts of commoning’. A shift in approach from ‘you’re on your own’ to ‘we’re in this together’.
